Are we fading away like UMass did after their Final 4?

Might have been Hewitt's first or second year, but I recall being infuriated watching Mason struggle to beat an awful Towson team at home. For some reason, that game and the FIU game come to mind when I think of Hewitt. I was at the UVA game - it did give me a glimmer of hope. Same with the epic vcu comeback. The crappy games were much more reflective of the Hewitt era.

I remember not too long ago when G Mas owned TOW (I mean seriously treated them like a little bitch). TOW is now a better program than G Mas.

I can't believe I am going to say this, but Hewitt's first season we won the 3rd most games in a single season in Mason history. Granted that roster might (or should have been) our best ever but its hard to call it a failure when comparing it to all the other seasons we have had. We made it to the semis of the conference tournament and lost to vcu which we pretty much did every time we played them down there. His 2nd year we probably had the biggest home win in Mason history when we beat UVA. It is what he did after that that was a colossal failure and a pile of shit.

Not picking on you because I see this all the time, but "most wins in school history" and other variants are empty arguments given that most teams are playing 3-4 more games per year as compared to 15 years ago. People do this all the time and it chafes me greatly.

That team finished 24-9 but was 110th in kenpom and didn't make the NIT. The only OOC win in the kenpom top 100 was, interestingly enough, Paulsen's Bucknell team at home. We beat up on a very shitty CAA and had losses to kenpom 124, 169, 189, 201, and 228. 14 of the 24 wins were kenpom 199 or worse. That record was empty calories through and through.

come on man LOL. making statements like that is what makes people not take you and @DJ3 's opinions seriously. While we are bottom of the barrel A10 with Paulsen we are certainly a better program than Towson. it is not comparable.

Playing zone against Penn did it for me whatever year that was. Think we barely won but it was aw-ful.

If you don't have the athletes to put defensive pressure on Penn, you sure as hell don't have the athletes to compete in the A-10.

For me Okoloji encapsulates the regime. Yes, that one guy. Big pivot point downward...

Petey this is precisely why I get so PO'd when most our fan base don't understand what empty wins are. Beating shitty teams in close games should not be applauded as much as it seems to be with our program. I hope this years OOC turns around a little bit or we will have to go through it all over again.

Ooh, I would disagree with you here...wouldn't say they're a better program but they're very comparable and I like their young guys.

Beat St. Jo's and GW...lost to Florida by six on the road

Let's also not forget that the loss to FIU prevented them from playing VA Tech and instead played Monmouth

scored 38 points to Vermont. they had I think 2 Ken Pom top 150 wins (not positive). they also lost their two players that are worth a damn going into next season. I won't die on the sword defending Mason against Towson for obvious reasons.... but I think we are a couple rings up. I will be watching them and W&M intently this upcoming season. Don't think Dane will do much in his second year there...

That makes my point even more viable. That changes our OOC SOS by like 10-15, so it is even more ironic that people hate on Hewitt's SOS yet defend Paulsen's new patterns of much weaker OOC SOS scheduling.

I mean, lets just hope their second-leading scorer doesn't choose Dayton or Richmond to transfer to...and, did we pursue him? We damn well should have...

I like their young guys, the freshman who averaged 8 a game last year, local kid frosh Charles Thompson...pretty good program over there.

I consider them more comparable than William and Mary will ever be at least...

I agree with what you are saying as I think that Hewitt's tenure was a failure. My point was more geared towards our fan base or some posters here that measure success on W's and L's. Trust me, I don't think that season or any season under Hewitt was a success. I have high expectations but am also realistic in the fact that we do not have a storied basketball program. That season was actually one of the better seasons we have had as a program but with the level of talent we had, we should have at least won the CAA regular season. Take away the amount of games we played and it was still the 3rd least amount of loses we have ever had. This COVID crap needs to end as I think it has corrupted my brain and i'm actually sounding like a Hewitt defender...

Did you know former Buck and Spur Gary Neal was their grad assistant last year??!!? I saw that and had a chuckle.

What makes Mason a better basketball program at this point?
