George Mason University Athletic Hall of Fame

It would probably carry more weight if it came from someone who was actually alive when guys like Carlos Yates played.

. . . or conversely, maybe from some one younger who actually might want to learn something new or interesting about our programs past history.

Shouldn't the school at least hang Rudolph Jones' jersey number from the rafters, and preclude other players from wearing it (i.e., Nsilo Abraham & Marko Gujanicic have worn it)?

You're reaching. Again.

"As part of Homecoming 2002 festivities in the Patriot Center, the George Mason Athletics Department will re-launch its official Athletics Hall of Fame with a halftime ceremony during the televised men’s basketball contest on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at 2 p.m.

The new Athletics Hall of Fame, dormant since the late 1970s, will include seven members who were enshrined during that decade. Also, a Hall of Fame constitution and criteria will be announced, kicking off an annual campaign of candidate review for induction."

Hopefully, there's a real re-launch in concert with the celebration for the 2006 Final Four.

Can't wait to see the re-launch, Part II.

"The new Athletics Hall of Fame, dormant from the 70s to 2002, re-launched for one ceremony then dormant again from 2002 till now......."

Speaks volumes to the lack of tradition and care of our Athletic Department...

Looks like somebody wants to remedy that.

For those wondering how Mason should address the "Carlos Yates situation", here is UMD's Athletic HOF's selection criteria - see http://themclub.org/hall-of-fame/criteria/:

"Section IV: Other Requirements for All Categories

  1. Election shall be based on athletic merit only, and never for other reasons.
  2. Nominees must have good character and reputation, and not have been a source of embarrassment in any way to the University."
I'm not sure how Len Bias was eligible for nomination based on this criteria. But, once he was nominated, election was based solely on athletic merit. Here is what I propose for Mason's Athletic HOF:

1. Election shall be based solely on athletic merit.

2. The nomination process shall consider athletic and non-athletic issues including character, reputation, and community service.

Hard to argue with that. I will say that my favorite Patriot of all time, not the best, just my favorite, is Myron Contee.
My favorite Patriot is Ryan Pearson.

But I also gotta say I've always had a special appreciation for Mike Morrison, especially his dunks - that dude could rock the rim with the best of them.

Thanks for posting!
I was a little disappointed that Tony didn't seem to have more knowledge of Carlos Yates. Yates is certainly on the MT. Rushmore of Mason greats. Yates, George Evans and Kenny Sanders are my top three.

At least he heard of Yates, he just didn't know what decade he played in. Perhaps, if Mason had an Athletic Hall of Fame . . . I'll stop before I get suspended from this board.

Haha! You aren’t going to get suspended for mentioning this topic. I promise. :)

I will say, everyone is very well aware. I was told it will be remedied in the new practice facility.

I think Otis Livingston and Josh Oduro should also belong in the hall of fame as well
I wonder if there is any precedent. Has any school retired a jersey or inducted a player to their own hall of fame even after said player transfers and finishes their college career at another school?

This is a good one for Pablo.

Oduro played 4 seasons for Mason, 2-time 1st Team All A-10, and earned his undergraduate degree here. I expect that he will eventually be inducted into the Mason Athletic Hall of Fame.

This depends on the criteria used for nomination. Yates has 2 strikes against him IMO. He was charged with a felony and never earned his degree. As we've speculated on this board, Yates is probably the reason the Mason Athletic Hall of Fame has been inactive for so long. Mason must address this issue just as UMD had to address the Len Bias issue - he was inducted into the Terrapins' Hall of Fame in 2014 (28 years after his overdose death).

Another former outstanding Mason player with a "character" issue is Jason Miskiri. Jason was contrite and accepted full responsibility for his crime, served his sentence, and is admirably conducting his restaurant business while selflessly giving back to the community. I hope that Miskiri is at least nominated for the Mason Athletic Hall of Fame some day.

Without Jason, Tony never comes to Mason as a player either. He’s the one who went to Coach L and encouraged him to take a look.
