I’d have to bet vcu loses Hill.

As long as Tony is our coach he’ll find the players he’s looking for in this current musical chairs transfer portal landscape.

The finished middle of the pack, made the NIT like we did and got farther than we did. That’s not the same thing as being La Salle.
Ok fine... imagine if we were a middle of the pack team who had no shot at winning the A-10, I'm glad that we can start fresh the following season with the portal and that we're not stuck with that mediocre team for more than a year.

Am I the only one that's happy that vcu is bringing back their whole squad? It lets Tony know exactly the kind of guys he needs to go out and get in order to match up and challenge them.

Ok. Maybe. But we finished middle of the pack in 2005 (16-13 and 10-8) and adding just two freshmen (Flemming and Hernandez) we finished 27-8 and made the Final Four the very next year.

Do we keep Campbell, Thomas, Butler, Skinn, and Jai Lewis in the portal/NIL era? Or does Larranaga have to start over again?

Very similar between 2010 and 2011 (17-15 in 2010 vs. 27-7 the very next year with basically the same roster).

The timeframes you are comparing to might as well be a different sport at this point with all the ways the sport has changed.

I know. But we are comparing the two eras. And it was possible to have pretty big single season turnarounds in the old era with being “stuck” with largely the same roster. Players got better, stronger, more experienced, and the longer they play together became better teams.

We are never going back, but I don’t know that having 11 new players every year fills me with more hope than the roster continuity of the old era.

Fair point... I guess I would choose my preference of era on which is more likely to happen.

Hoping that a "mid" roster matures into a legitimate contender (as you mentioned, it's only really happened twice)?

or

Not being handcuffed to that mediocre roster and having the ability to field a completely new team on any given year that can compete?

As long as we have the coaching staff that can recruit and coach with the best of them, if not better, like CTS, I prefer the portal era.

I was watching some of the Auburn NIT game and the announcer mentioned that Hall was among the leaders in the NCAA for FTs made. So I looked it up on NCAA.com and found:

1. Dybantsa- BYU
...
3. Okojie- Mercer
4. Hall- Auburn

5. Boozer- Duke

Doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things, but an interesting fact that will win you a few bar bets!

GIVING DAY 2023
All this NIL stuff is....
Let 'em all go! I don't really care anymore.
They don't care. I don't care.
As far as Giving Day, why are we giving anyway if we're just throwing money down a black hole?
Good luck, Tony. I truly wonder how long he, or any coach, is going to continue to put up with this stuff.
At least back in the pre-ECAC South days, we knew who the players were and they stayed 3 (freshmen were ineligible) years.
So next year CTE will bring a new group of guys who don't give a darn, I won't learn their names, and then they will move on.
I only gave $25. I'm almost sorry I gave that.

it's hard to disagree at this point. One more straw added to the camel's back.

I can't fault Long for testing the waters, but am hopeful he returns.

I'd guess most of us would be willing to have a conversation with a new employer if there's potential for a big raise.

Hopefully we get the right of refusal from Long.

I do hope it’s a Walton situation and he says sike

A lot of fans might feel tapped. Season Ticket + Required Donations rose somewhat significantly over last year. Some of us are already spending thousands towards Mason basketball already. A disappointing Feb and March wasn't good for fundraising spirits...even though giving more would help with the overall cause and hurdles of staying competitive in the current college sports landscape.
