I’m so over this argument. It’s such a pain to get into DC. If there were a fun game day experience in NoVA, NoVA residents would show up. And there are a lot of NoVA residents!
what about the reverse?
Georgetown/Capital One and GWU are accessible via metro.
GMU is not.

I do not understand why there was never a marketing attempt to the Greater DC - especially when Georgetown sucked - coupled with a bus service from the Metro to the Mall across the street then to Eag;ebank.

We had one after 2006. But Mason never really sustains anything. It seems we took a pretty major step back during the Cabrera era.

I think focusing on NOVA is a good choice. There are tons of people in Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William Counties. Trying to market in DC and Maryland seems like a bit of a fools errand, but I also don’t see a problem marketing on the Orange Line again, because NOVA commuters/families will see it on their way in to the city.

A serious question.

How has the marketing to NOVA worked out?
Has there been an increase in attendance/STHs - directly attributed to that NOVA Marketing Campaign?

I dont expect anyone on this board to know - but i hope the marketing department of the AD does.

That is likely impossible to know - its a piece of the overall marketing pie, not a specific thing that is going to make someone say "oh, Nova's team?! I better get to some games".

IMO it is one of the best marketing moves they have made in the last 30 years of my experience.

My point is you have Captive audience in Harrisonburg on Saturday afternoon, nothing else is going in...Northern Virginia is the V in DMV. Your average family with 3 kids will choose the Wizards or Commanders over Mason vs. Towson
....the only thing that will attract the casual fan...even off Sideburn road or Burke Centre Parkway to EBA is winning on a consistent level and getting to the NCAA...do that...

I'd be shocked if they aren't running in-market media surveys that are measuring campaign effectiveness.

I also hope they don't abandon this campaign anytime soon, takes awhile for brand efforts like this to break through and eventually sustain. All things I'm sure (I'd hope) they're measuring and optimizing.

Ummm... ever been to H-burg on the weekend? I went to grad school there. Thursday night the bars around campus are hopping. Friday, Saturday, Sunday—dead, dead, and deader. Many, many students split town for the weekends—especially the party-hounds. Sometimes they'll stick around for a big football game or home coming or a big party, but that's it. Things might have changed since I was there, but I suspect they have not.

The admin and AD need to realize they need to create fans from within.... your students. Throw the kitchen sink at them early from acceptance letter to graduation and stress being a loyal and sporting fan.... especially for our Bball teams. They need to brand us a basketball school. Keep reminding our students and alumni and community that we are basketball focused and went to Final Four... even if it was 20 years ago. WE are the original Cinderella. Our marketing team should be all over this and promote it everywhere and every year. Hell... all over Richmond and on I-95 in Richmond you see vcu billboards promoting their bball team. When people see vcu in Richmond they think Basketball.

For 30 years we have the same conversations about going after people around NOVA and the casual fans.... it's not gonna happen in getting 1000 new season ticket holders coming.... that's a pipe dream in this area. You have to remember NOVA is a very large transient area. A large percentage of people that live around the Fairfax campus never went to Mason, thus would probably not care too much for our sporting events. They moved here for a job or for family reasons with really no ties to the school besides living close to it and driving around it for the people residing in Fairfax, Burke, etc. There are also a lot of JMU, VT, UVA, Radford, Longwood, etc. alumni around Fairfax.... they aren't going to come to a GMU game unless we are playing their school or they get free tickets from a friend/co-worker and/or ask them to go with them to a game.

Over the past 30 years, I don't think these NOVA residents/casual fans would be interested in a Hofstra or Davidson match outside our core alumni and die hards or big bball fans in general. Hence the continuous 2500-3000 attendance draws for these games usually.

Branding us NOVA's team is cute and all but will it really move the needle with these types of people? I'm going to say no. In this area we have to schedule big time opponents to draw a large crowd - UVA, VT, UMD, Gtown Tennessee, Penn State, WV, etc. These types of games will get us 5k and upwards for attendance. Other than that.... get use to season norm of 2500-4000 a game.... it's just our reality in this world right now.

Would rather take any major marketing campaign money and just invest back into our NIL. Until we reach the NCAA tourney and get more eyes on us and be more relevant again to sports fans and people around NOVA.... we will continue to be stagnant with our yearly attendance rate.

“It’s a launchpad.”

“A place where people come to make something of themselves.”

“Where ambition lives. Where hard work matters. And where what’s next is always bigger than what’s behind us.”

[MUSIC SHIFTS — STRONGER, MORE ENERGETIC]

“And while we all have different stories…”

“Different backgrounds…”

“Different dreams…”

“There’s one thing we can all share.”

“One place where all of Northern Virginia comes together.”

[MUSIC HITS FULL ENERGY]
