I can’t see them going with it. It would go down as the biggest mistake in NCAA history. March madness is their biggest money maker, to mess with that on such a massive level would be insanity.
And since when has the NCAA done anything sane in recent memory?

It wouldn’t be the NCAA that does it. Let’s keep in mind that the courts have destroyed the NCAA model all on their own (first with Board of Regents which created that haves and have nots, and now with NIL). If the Power 5 presidents all got together and voted en masse to leave the NCAA, the NCAA is powerless to stop them (all they could do is ban the schools sports from competing in any of their championships).

Everyone points fingers at the NCAA, and rightfully so.
But the NCAA is made of, and works for, its member schools. Every NCAA President came from a member school. This is not an independent organization.
Blame the NCAA, sure. But blame the schools too because the NCAA can't pass any rules without the schools approving them.

Let's be clear, they were able to entice zero Southern Conference teams to join. The CAA is now a lesser conference than the SoCon. SoCon would not have invited Campbell.

Campbell had an insanely talented baseball team this past season, and their football program has been recruiting like crazy. I believe they had a Top 3 ranked FCS class last year, and are currently #2 behind Jackson State this year.

"A Colorado departure from the Pac-12 would come after the 2023-24 season and would coincide with the end of the Pac-12 television deal. That would mean that Colorado would not have to pay any exit fee to the league.

Colorado is expected to formally apply for membership Thursday, the same day the school's board of regents is holding a 'special board meeting' that sources say includes a vote on the move to the Big 12. Sources expect the final steps to be taken Thursday and a deal to be formalized."

"The whole notion of expanding once the media rights deal was cool and dandy in theory, but it obviously has come back to bite the Pac-12. Many insiders believed the Pac-12 should have expanded first then secured a deal, and now they are on life support and will need to rely on expansion to save them. A less than ideal situation to be in. The media rights deal will be even more of a tough sell to conglomerates now, so adding programs and showing stability would make a huge difference. The Pac-12 needs to invite their top two candidates of San Diego State and SMU, but they cannot stop there. Adding Colorado State to retain the Denver market seems like a fairly obvious move, and adding another program like a UNLV or Hawaii. The fourth slot is a wild card, but the Pac-12 may not be in position to be valuing academics and geography as much as they have. "

"With Colorado initiating the process to leave the Pac-12 and join the Big 12 for the 2024-25 season, it marks a significant ripple in college athletics as the next phase in realignment.

Here's a look at the biggest questions for both leagues and what's next on the landscape in the wake of Colorado's looming departure.

What's next for the Big 12?

The league is now slated to have 13 teams for 2024-25, and it would make sense to add another in time for the 2024 football season. Where will that team come from? And could more than one be added?

The preference of the Big 12 would be one of the Pac-12's other so-called Four Corners schools -- Arizona, Arizona State or Utah. According to sources, Arizona has been the most engaged among those three schools. But virtually every school in the league has had some kind of contact with the Big 12, as the Pac-12 has spun its wheels on landing a television deal for nearly a year. It would be fiduciary negligence to not explore other options.

Arizona's decision-making will be made more through the prism of basketball than most power conference schools, which would make a move to the Big 12 more attractive. Pac-12 basketball has been significantly weakened with the loss of USC and UCLA, and the Big 12 has been the country's top basketball conference in recent years. Arizona president Bobby Robbins has maintained publicly that no decisions will be made until there's clarity on the Pac-12's television deal. That will be put to the test after Colorado's decision."

You are probably correct. It could be hard to stop the bleeding now.

I would be sad to see the PAC 12 come to an end. It's got such a fantastic history.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the underlying cause of the implosion in the PAC12?

Are schools like Colorado leaving because the other conferences have better media contracts/media exposure especially in football? In other words.....MONEY!!!!!!!!!!
