Game 27: Richmond, Feb 26th, 7 PM, MASN

I just want to point out that the team we beat tonight had an RPI of 48 and started 3 sophomores and 2 juniors with 2 freshmen and 1 sophomore coming off the bench. They were 8-4 in the A-10 and 18-9 overall.

Youth is no excuse.

Agree, and I'll add that neither is 'a lack of talent'. You can't convince me that we just don't have the horses that the 18-win Spiders have.

The friend I took remarked how loud it got for how empty it looked. Low 3k's is my guess. The younger crowd seems to have stopped attending. Student section half full. And people still left early to beat the traffic.

And this was their 6th game after losing 2 seniors....

...they are young because of injuries/defections...not because Mooney wants to play that way. They are 4-2 with this current line up.

I agree with you -- in fact, I loathe excuses in sports -- but the fact remains that UR didn't build that record or RPI number with its current team.

Ced Lindsay was playing at a A-10 POY level before he got hurt. Derrick Williams, while a shadow of himself physically due to injuries, still provided beef and depth on the front line that was sorely missing last night.

The Spiders have talent, and have been overachieving since the 2 seniors went down, but are not an NCAA team as presently constituted.

If they had been playing with their current team from the first game of this season, they wouldn't be anywhere close to the bubble ... and we won't be next season, either.

Those back-to-back buckets by Holloway were HUGE down the stretch...

Just glad, for once, they closed it out a home.

Love that some people are using a win to still bash the coach and prognosticate his excuses for future failure. Walk away from the computer and enjoy a win for once.

While our defense down the stretch was abysmal, I liked that a lot of guys made big plays to hold on to this one. BA's 3 to take it from 7 to 10, PH's 3 and subsequent dribble drive, Marco's save, Jenkins offensive board and putback. Nice, especially for the 3 underclassmen mentioned to see them learning how to win. Despite their talent that's something I'm not sure our seniors ever completely learned how to do.

Sorry, I find it difficult to enjoy meaningless wins at the end of miserable, lost seasons.

I allowed myself to be burned by the improved play during the 2013 CBI, thinking it would somehow translate into success this season. I was wrong, obviously.

Maybe, just maybe, we could get off to a good enough start so that these late-season games actually mean something. Is that too much to ask?

I haven't read through all these posts since yesterday afternoon. my thoughts on last night:
- there was zero energy in the building at the tip. I'm shocked we came out and played as well as we did, seeing we have nothing to play for and they are (now, probably "were") on the bubble

-it was a battle of matching Nike style uniforms. But as the good Dr Gunnie pointed out to me, their fonts are much better than ours

-with about 6 minutes in the game, was anyone else worried we were on our way to an L? We continue to leave team's best shooters wide open for 3s. Thankfully, they missed enough at the end

-sadly, we are going to be listed as a bad loss when seeing Richmond's profile from now until selection Sunday.

Toward the end of the game the TV broadcast showed our bench, Corey and VG said something to each other and then shook hands, I wonder what they said.

We're still both transferring after this season right ::shake::

Related to the post I quoted, it looked like we were playing a pretty good zone D in the first half when we took the early lead. We won the first half big. We lost the second half (luckily not by as much as we won the first half) and if I recall correctly we did not play nearly as much zone D. I am trying to remember if we played it at all. It looked like Anthony went off, partially when Moore got tired at the end. It seems that more zone D would have helped with that too.

Did I miss something?

Brian, the odd thing about last night was they got a lot more open looks from behind the arc in the first half when we were in a zone than they did in the second half when we switched to man.

The difference was they missed the open looks in the first half (2-12) and shot 44% in the second half (8-18) — mostly because Kendall Anthony became unconscious even on the possessions when we had a hand in his face. I knew we were going to be in for a close finish when one of their players hit an off-balance 3 from NBA range at the top of the key. Fortunately, we held on for the win.

I was a little shocked that there was little energy in the building. Considering it was a "local" opponent, I thought people would have been a little charged up to see it. With that said, I think everyone was holding their breath until the final minute when they finally wrapped it up, and the 3000 or so in attendance let out a nice loud standing ovation in unison.

A bit misleading as they have started 2 seniors for much of the season, both did not play lastnight however. I know Lindsey is injured, not sure what happened to the big guy....Walker I think?

Derrick Williams left the team earlier this month for "personal reasons."

Rumors being rumors, but I hear Gray/Edwards/Okoloji will be riding the pine at other schools after this season.
