Farewell to Ahmad Gilbert

Just cant help but thinking that next year is going to be very difficult. I sure want GM to play better ball, but we have a significant lack of talent. Sure, I believe Paulson may get more out of the current cast, but we are a long way from being 500 or better. Paulson will need at least three years to prove his worth and recruit some competitive players. In the meantime everyone take a large dose of patience pills.

Possibly our best player, S. Thompson has one year left, and then what, Trey Porter taking over the middle. What a scary thought.

Blewitt really screwed us big time.

This is pretty short sighted. While I've also mentioned in the past that we have a talent gap with the upper echelon teams in the A10 there is enough talent on the current roster to be competitive next year. By competitive I mean a .500 level team. Once DP assess our current players and puts them where their skills are most effective we will improve. I think we can be a top A10 team in 2/3 years, especailly if DP proves he can recruit at this new level.

I guess I am having a hard time understanding what you mean by talent. What I see is deficient ball handling by the guards, M. Moore can handle the ball Ok, but has no outside shot, P. Holloway entirely too streaky, maybe some set screen plays will improve his play, but is a defensive liability.. After those two, we have no one. Our forwards need a lot of help, Marco, Royal, from what I see they are very slow, with little athleticism. Jalen is our best hope, and he digressed last year to the point, where I don't have a clue what he can do. I. Jackson, was a pleasant surprise, so he is has shown a lot of potential.

S. Thompson is our strength , but like I said we have him one more year. Do you really think Trey Porter is an A10 center? Unless the guy puts on 30 lbs of muscle, I just don't see it.

and we are left with unknowns, Lockett, and Myimba, wherever he is.

But, I understand you are entitled to your opinion. we just see things differently.

GIVING DAY 2023
Oh well, can't be too surprised or upset. Not like we're one piece away from being an NCAA-caliber team ... and who knows whether Ahmad would've been a fit with what Paulsen wants to run anyhow?

Good luck to the kid. Hope he has a successful college career and we find a quality player to take the scholarship he's giving up.

We'll still have roster redundancy, with three upper class men deserving minutes at the four. We will still have inefficient (and young) guard play.

Good coach, good system, this team remains 2-3 years off from anything better than .500 in the A-10.

But, I have no doubt good times are ahead. Gilbert really has a chance to grab that SF spot here from day one ala Luke Hancock as well.

What you call the 2-3 is irrelevant. They could both start alongside Marquis from day one, conceivably.

Agreed. Having a 6'6" left-handed slasher at the 3 who can also knock down the three would be a great asset on the floor complementing the games of Jackson and Moore. While I see increased playing time for Patrick, I think the coach will be looking at the future of the program and playing those who show promise in addition to working hard and competing at practice. With Lockett coming off an injury and the status of Mayimba still up in the air, I see this as a real possibility.

Yup. Not a slam dunk, but he certainly would have the opportunity to start from Day 1 at Mason. Certainly at least log some significant minutes.

With a new coach, the upper classman will be learning Paulsen's system as well, and have no advantage in that regard over him.

Hope he keeps Mason as his favorite. Might still be the right place for him.

I guess that I'm the only one on this board who believes it's relevant, particularly defensively. While Isaiah can effectively play both the "2" and "3", I believe that he's primarily a SF. Frankly, I'm looking forward to Eric Lockett playing the "2" next season.

Hewitt would make a hell of a politician. The fact such a terrible coach created such a relationship with good players and sold them to come into his dumpster fire is crazy.

Losing Gilbert is a price Im well worth paying to get rid of Hewitt. Lucky for us though, we still have a scrap heap of other 6'7 tweeners that are left over from Hewitt lol.

I mean, yeah, it's relevant if neither can guard 2's. But not much difference guarding 2's and 3's, and if that's the case, you could always implement a more sagging man system or adjust or whatever. Hewitt wouldn't do that, hopefully Paulsen will.

Hey, though, defense first, I agree. Lockett could certainly win the spot as well.

My main point is a starting spot is certainly out there to be won. No guarantee Jackson's or Moore's is even safe, though I think both are likely to start.

The Julian Royal I saw had a ton of athleticism, especially when paired with Jenkins and the three guards (Moore, Edwards, and Jackson). Unfortunately, that group played so well when Shevon got in foul trouble that the coach never played them together again!
