Hello All,

I was tired of trying to guess what coach Paulsen's recruitng philosophy is so I actually tracked him down and he was gracious enough to speak with me for about 15 minutes.

Below is an small 1 minute excerpt of the interview which I think will give us all a little bit of insight on where DP stands. Some might find it a bit surprising. I know I did. He speaks about how he will apply his"Burn Your Boats" philosophy to recruitng.

CHANK: So coach, I know some people have been saying that wer are struggling little bit more than usual in our recruiting.

DP: Yea, we haven’t done bad, but we have been struggling with a couple of top recruits that we thought would be program changers. But we’re gonna go back to the “Burn Your Boat” philosophy and now apply it to recruiting as well and I think that will definitely yield us better results

CHANK: Oh okay, so how will the “Burn Your Boats” philosophy be applied to recruiting?

DP: Well Chank, what we’re gonna do is when recruits come to visit Mason, we are going to arrange a boat to take us all to an island in the Chesapeake Bay. We’ll get off the boat and then burn it and tell the recruit that if he has any hopes of getting back to the main land, his a** better sign with us.

CHANK: Um…. Okay, that seems a bit extreme, doesn’t it coach?

DP: Yea, well I’m a pretty f**ked up guy, most people don’t know that. My dark side nothing to mess with. And I’m not going back to rural Pennsylvania again. I love it here in VA. I mean there’s like 4 Wegman’s within 10 miles of me.

Like I said, “conspiracy theory,” but looking at that tweet and his defense of Hewitt and it’s pretty evident he doesn’t like Paulsen.

Jesus, this is a terrible take. He’s racist because he likes Hewitt? You went from calling him a borderline racist to nailing racist on his forehead. Just because Butler and Hewitt are both black doesn’t mean their relationship is racially driven...

Also, Butler coaches at PVI, one of the best teams in the nation.

Also, also, he clarified his tweet was not about Mason at all. I know content is slow in the summer but no need to make all these assumptions about former players when the answer is in the tweet thread. If you’re bored and wanting Mason content, you know we’re always providing!

Howard, Hardaway etc. Prefers that black coaches get to coach black players. I have a problem with such narrow minded thinking that excludes other players and suggests other coaches are less than. Especially when black coaches like Avery Johnson, Stoudimire, Ewing, etc have struggled. Black players transfer from black coaches too. Have the same issues internally as white head coaches. To suggest that bc you are a black coach you have an edge with black players is just shortsighted and wrong. What do we call that?

I would love for him to be an assistant coach at his and my alma mater. If DP didn't reach out to him when there were vacancies, he should have.

You're missing the point. Point is I simply disagree with black coaches favoring other black coaches by saying they relate better to players when they have same struggles as white coaches. One isnt better or worse than the other.
