FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team will travel to last season's Atlantic 10 Co-Regular Season Champions Rhode Island for its' first conference road test of the season.

The last time out, Mason and Rhode Island both opened Atlantic 10 play with a victory. The Patriots dominated La Salle, 74-37, at home and the Rams downs reigning Atlantic 10 Champions Saint Louis, 63-58 on the road.

George Mason and Rhode Island will meet for the 11th time in program history with all meetings coming as members of the Atlantic 10 conference. The two teams have met in the regular season in each of the 10 years Mason has been in the A-10, with Rhode Island holding a slight 4-6 edge over the Patriots. The conference's regular season co-champs edged Mason 57-53 in Fairfax a year ago in a thriller.

PATRIOT POINTS
  • The Patriots opened up conference play with a dominating 74-37 win over La Salle. La Salle's 37 points are the fewest by an A-10 opponent since Mason joined the league in 2013
  • Zahirah Walton led the Patriots in scoring for the second-straight game with 12 points. Kennedy Harris and Page Greenburg also notched 11 each
  • Mason once again led their opponent in almost every category, including in rebounding, 50-40. Harris, Taylor Jameson and Nekhu Mitchell all pulled down and team-high six each
  • The Patriots lead the Atlantic 10 in rebounding with 44.8 boards per game (17th nationally), a 6.58 turnover margin (18th nationally) and are forcing opponents into a league best 21.2 turnovers per game (27th nationally)

Really felt like we should had that one, some uncharacteristic turnovers in key spots by Mason and some luck on well-defended 3s by Rhody. It would have been huge to steal that game on the road, but even a 2-point loss validates that Mason will be a double-bye contender in the A10.

"FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team looks to get back in the win column this weekend when it travels to Pittsburgh to take on the Duquesne Dukes. The game will be broadcasted nationally on CBS Sports Network.

George Mason and Duquesne will meet for the 15th time in program history, as the Patriots look for their first road win over the Dukes in the series. The Dukes hold an 11-3 record over Mason all-time, including 10-1 in Atlantic 10 play. Last year in Fairfax, the Patriots picked up their first conference win over Duquesne since Mason joined the A10 in 2013-14.

The last time out, Mason was just edged by Rhode Island on the road, 70-68. On the other hand, Duquesne picked up their second Atlantic 10 win of the season over Dayton in dominating fashion, downing the Flyers 70-42 on the road.

  • On Tuesday, freshman Kennedy Harris was tabbed the A-10 Rookie of the Week for the second time in her career for her 11-point, 6-rebound performance over La Salle
  • Sonia Smith posted her third 20-point performance in the last seven contests to lead the team. She is averaging a team-best 13.8 points (10th, A-10) and 3.0 assists (10th, A-10)

"PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The George Mason women's basketball team hit a program record 18 three-pointers as the Patriots downed Duquesne 101-75.

The Patriots (11-3, 2-1) were led on both sides of the court by senior Sonia Smith, who posted the first 30-point performance of her career on a career-high 11 field goals and five three-pointers. She also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and dished out a game and season-high eight assists. Her performance is just the fourth 30-point performance of the season by an Atlantic 10 player."

  • Kennedy Harris also had a career-day, posting 23 points on 8-13 shooting, including going 5-9 from beyond the arc. She also dished out a career-high three assists while grabbing a team-best two steals
  • Mason's 37 field goals are the most this season, while its' 56.1% from the field and 51.4% shooting from three are the best shooting performances by the team this year
  • Ta'Viyanna Habib (14) and Taylor Jameson (10) also tallied double-figure scoring
  • The Patriot bench once again shined, doubling up Duquesne's 43-21

Smith, Harris Sweep Atlantic 10 Weekly Honors​


"WASHINGTON, D.C. – The George Mason women's basketball team duo of senior Sonia Smith and freshman Kennedy Harris have swept the Atlantic 10 Weekly awards on Monday, announced by the league office this afternoon.

Smith and Harris mark the fourth and fifth weekly honors for the Patriots this season, the most by any team in the conference, as well as the third straight week a Patriots has earned a Rookie of the Week honor.


A native of Upper Marlboro, Md., Smith had a career week, averaging 25.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 5.0 assists while shooting 54.1% from the field and 43.8% beyond the arc. In Tuesday's narrow defeat to preseason favorite Rhode Island, Smith posted her third 20-point game of the season to lead the team. She matched her then-career-best of nine field goals to go with four rebounds, two assists and a steal. In the Patriots' rout of Duquesne on Sunday, Smith contributed just under a third of the team's 101 points, tallying the first 30-point performance of her career. She converted a career-best 11 field goals and five three-pointers to go with nine rebounds and a season-high eight assists.

Smith's Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honor is the first for the senior since joining the team prior to the 2022-23 season.

Hailing from Hampton, Va., Harris picked up her third Rookie of the Week honor and second-straight on Monday. She averaged a comprehensive 13.0 points, 2.5 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals while converting 50% of her shots throughout the week, including 54.5% of shots from beyond the arc. Her week was highlighted by the first 20-point performance of her young career, posting 23 against Duquesne on Sunday after hitting a career-high eight field goals with five three-pointers. She also matched her career-high of three assists against the Dukes for the fourth time this season."
