First, that was a great game. The team showed grit. Everytime URI made a run...Mason had an answer..then they put URI away....you gotta win games like to get it the 2nd bye.

Second, win the A10 and make it to the big dance.. then the students will start to come back...pure and simple.

Harder than you think. We really shouldn’t be that hard on the current crop of students. There has been zero leadership and zero consistency for such a long time that whatever traditions got implemented in the student section post-FF are long gone by now.

It’s going to take years and some dedication to get students to behave the way they’re supposed to at these games.
I will say this until I’m blue in the face. Mason arrests students for the dumbest things, students are too scared to let loose

GIVING DAY 2023
That was an amazing game and an amazing day. It was so awesome to connect with so many people from here and elsewhere whether it was in the parking lot or during halftime etc. Words can’t describe it.

If you are more worried about students not standing, when the band plays etc, I really don’t think that’s what’s important in a game Like yesterday. Yes the students looked disinterested. However that’s what they are at this point and dwelling on it, is a waste of time. However the other 5500 people who were in the arena were downright amazing, loud and engaging. The kids fed off it because we’d be loud after one play and they’d do something else and we got even louder. It’s the loudest the arena has been in years, and the most fun I’ve had at a game in years as well.

As far as the game, we over came a rough start but hung our hats on playing defense and getting back into it. We stopped settling for 3s and started going to the rim. Maddox started in the first half getting to the rim which really opened things up. Voila. Props to Rhode Island for seemingly making tough shot after tough shot, but fortunately we got enough stops to get the win.

okojie is an absolute stud and played out of this world yesterday. Hats off to him for constantly getting to the rim, hitting free throws and playing solid defense. His two steals really changed the game for us. I dont think we saw Ronny in half 2 and it will continue to spur the debate of whether Baraka needs to start. In my opinion, I think it’s time, and Ronny can be 6th man and first sub.

im going to try and rewatch the game and possibly put more thoughts together, but it really was a great game and great day.

Apparently that was the giveaway for the maniaks. Seems kinda weak imo. Have we ever tried those plastic thunder sticks as a promotional giveaway? At least with that the Maniaks could bang them together to create a noisy intimidating environment. What good is a foam noodle?

You can give students everything but they sit down and don’t get much engaged to the game. They barely waved the rally towels.

My last comment a bunch of you who luv CKE know that he saw the disinterested students. Hell he was going to schedule cheer classes at orientation if he stayed.

I’d love to see the new staff do that. I think that’s a great idea honestly.

Whether it would work, tbd. But I know winning big creates interest and continuity.

None of that matters right now, we won a big game, continue to win at home and now need to watch our guys play Wednesday.

The cheer culture of any fanbase has to develop organically. Win consistently and it will happen. Students take classes all week. They don’t want to got to another “class” to be lectured to about how to cheer in my opinion.

The environment in yesterday’s game is something many students and fans will want to be a part of consistently if we give them a consistently winning program. Which is what Skinn will absolutely develop by winning.

Exciting times for the present and future of Mason basketball.

Nice to pull out a win in front of a good crowd. The slow start was reminding me of other missed opportunities to put on a show for a nice crowd.
Baraka took over in the second half and Maddox again with some clutch shots late to help pull out the win.

One thing that bothered me and I hope Tony uses it as a learning experience. There was no reason not to be subbing out Hall offense/defense. That 3rd foul he picked up with 1:30 left in the first half could have cost Mason the win.

He said he thought we needed an offensive boost and so he put Hall back in. Hall had no reason to try to challenge the shot he did when he picked up his third.

Really hard to go offense/defense when neither team is fouling (like an end of game scenario). Hall's 3rd came after a made basket. So unless you want him to take a T.O. there, you just got to trust him not to pick up the foul.

Hall did score 5 and drew 2 fouls in those final minutes of the half. Did a good job of not fouling in the 2nd half. I'm not sure hindsight is going to tell Tony that it was the wrong call.

Just rewatched the game. My last thoughts

Other thoughts

Energy plays - rebounding- Jared Billups. Does all the little things for winning basketball. Had a ton of rebounds in half one.

I know it’s been said but having 6’8 woody newton on top of a 1-3-1 is awesome. That’s how we crawled back into the game in the first half. It worked the majority of the time with few exceptions. It was great to see Newton hit a 3 as he’s been struggling. When Billups got a steal and Maddox hit a 3 the place erupted. 10-0 run in about a minute 37.

Green for Rhode Island had heckuva first half. Late in the half he drove to the lane, Maddox deflected his shot and then Kelly deflected his second shot. Amazing team defense there. Green just was making everything in the half. 22 points in the first half he had. Apparently it’s only his 5th game since he’s transferred twice.

Maddox really got our offense going - hit a big three with less than a minute in half one.

We came out flat in half 2 but got going after we brought Okojie in. Very quick 7-0 run we had after the change. Props to Keyshawn hall who had foul trouble in half 1, coming out and having a strong half 2. That’s tough. He scored 8 points early in half 2 to get us going. The pass from Hall to Maddox for a 3 was amazing .

Kelly got a block and Baraka sprinting down the floor for a layup was awesome. Next possession Baraka jumps the passing lane and throws an alley oop perfectly to Keyshawn. AWESOME. These two plays turned the game completely and the kid just took over.

Billups hit a big three late in the half. Nice to see him hit one. Lastly Maddox hit a big late jumper and a big three. 23 points and a new career high.
