I think my feelings on this are known by just about everyone. Hopefully they wrap up the university master plan soon, so that athletics stuff can get unstuck. It's really amazing how glacial the pace of anything is.

I mean sure its an excuse and relatively lame, but space for anything is an issue at EBA. Thats why gold room has remained what it is for 30 years.

If you have an idea of where it should be, do share, because I certainly can't think of one. The RAC? In the office area? In the Practice Facility?

Talk to Brad about it and see what you get in terms of a response.

What’s going on in the restaurant space that is no longer a restaurant in the Johnson Center? The one that was on the third floor?

I haven’t been in the JC in at least 4 years and haven’t been on the third floor probably since school, so I have no idea. I think it’s used for something now, but I’m not sure.

If you’d be able to sprint to the JC at halftime, chug a beer, and sprint back for the game you need to reenroll and get a track scholarship because you are the fastest man alive. Absolutely not an option any fan would take advantage of, I’d be pissed if that’s where the donor room was.

We were talking about a spot for the hall of fame. I would consider the JC a temporary spot until they get off their asses and create a plan for exoanding/renovating EBA or build a new arena.

That's why I gave it a thumbs up. Temporary, not permanent. At least do something!

First, those of us who have been around GMU athletics long enough know the real reason why its Athletic Hall of Fame has been dormant for decades. And, it certainly isn't about the lack of space for a display. But, if this is the current excuse, then why not propose the JC at least as a temporary solution?

Secondly, the Athletic Hall of Fame honors coaches and players in different sports, not just basketball. So, the display does not have to be at EBA. After the GMU Athletic Hall of Fame went dormant, sports including men's soccer and track and field started their own Hall of Fame, because they want their coaches and players to be properly honored for excellence.

Thirdly, UMD figured out how to address its "Len Bias issue." Perhaps, it's time for GMU to properly address its "Carlos Yates issue" and reactivate its Athletic Hall of Fame.

BTW, this is how my alma mater honors its sports history:

Yes, Carlos Yates' death was tragic on many levels, but as you say, there must be an appropriate/teachable way of highlighting/celebrating his Mason career.

Good for them. But I must say, at first glance I thought I was looking at a parking garage!

And in retrospect the Bias Story may be a little easier to tell and deal with then the Yates Story

Let’s convert Darrel Green’s office to the hall of fame. Or Tom O’connor’s house.

Wonderful article. Thanks for posting. I remember reading it somewhere before, but I don't remember when or where.
FWIW, I was at that game at Duke, and remember it well. I was living in the town of Wake Forest at the time, only about a 30 minute drive from Cameron.

Unfortunately, we don't know all of the facts related to Carlos Yates' death - https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/ex-george-mason-star-slain/2011/12/14/gIQA0t7PuO_story.html

"Yates, 27, was shot several times in the chest shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday near 18th and East Capitol streets SE, across the street from Eastern High School. He was taken to D.C. General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

D.C. police said they believe the slaying was linked to drugs. No other details of the shooting were available, and officers said they had no suspects.

Yates was arrested in Maryland this spring and charged in U.S. District Court in Baltimore with conspiracy to distribute cocaine, said Harvey E. Eisenberg, an assistant U.S. attorney in Baltimore and coordinator of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Eisenberg said last night that Yates’s trial was pending and that he was out on bail."

Was Yates murdered in retaliation because he was cooperating with law enforcement after his arrest?

IMO, in deciding who are worthy to be inducted into the GMU Athletic Hall of Fame, character and conduct must be considered in the nomination process. Yates and Jason Miskiri are former basketball players whose athletic excellence should be considered for nomination. But, should their criminal or alleged criminal conduct after their GMU career disqualify them for nomination? In the case of Miskiri, I believe that he has made amends for his criminal activity and should not be disqualified for nomination.

GMU needs to determine whether Carlos Yates' conduct after his GMU career disqualifies him for nomination to its Athletic Hall of Fame. And, then move on and reactivate the Athletic Hall of Fame.

I know we already made fun of Mason for their answer on where the hall of fame should be and not considering anything, but has anyone actually asked about the activation of the Mason Athletics hall of fame? I know I haven't specifically, just heard about where it would go. I suspect the two go hand and hand, but I'm curious if there is a separation of answer.

I have an actually document of all these sorts of topics with @MasonFanatic and going to put some commentary around the activation to see if at some point we get some clarity around that topic.

Many years ago when Tom O'Connor was still the AD, the school made an official announcement that the Athletic Hall of Fame would be reactivated in conjunction with Homecoming. Perhaps, you should find out why this never happened.

I’ll find the article and I’ll put it as a note in my grievances document as point of reference. :)

I found an old thread that linked to an article from 2002 that doesn’t even work anymore. Most likely nobody would be able to answer why the hall of fame was never activated in 2002, but it’s worth an ask and doesn’t excuse why it hasn’t been at least activated.

"As part of Homecoming 2002 festivities in the Patriot Center, the George Mason Athletics Department will re-launch its official Athletics Hall of Fame with a halftime ceremony during the televised men’s basketball contest on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at 2 p.m.

The new Athletics Hall of Fame, dormant since the late 1970s, will include seven members who were enshrined during that decade. Also, a Hall of Fame constitution and criteria will be announced, kicking off an annual campaign of candidate review for induction."

Hopefully, there's a real re-launch in concert with the celebration for the 2006 Final Four.

For those wondering how Mason should address the "Carlos Yates situation", here is UMD's Athletic HOF's selection criteria - see http://themclub.org/hall-of-fame/criteria/:

"Section IV: Other Requirements for All Categories

  1. Election shall be based on athletic merit only, and never for other reasons.
  2. Nominees must have good character and reputation, and not have been a source of embarrassment in any way to the University."
I'm not sure how Len Bias was eligible for nomination based on this criteria. But, once he was nominated, election was based solely on athletic merit. Here is what I propose for Mason's Athletic HOF:

1. Election shall be based solely on athletic merit.

2. The nomination process shall consider athletic and non-athletic issues including character, reputation, and community service.
