"Mason --- that was my second time there and I'd like to get there in daylight and see just what the campus looks like. Looked great at night. Lots of trees. Brick buildings. Kids everywhere. The Patriot Center is very nice and puts the usual pits like Hagan, Gola, Rose Hill, Palumbo and Reilly to shame. I have never been to the Ryan or Mullins Centers but the Patriot Center rivals Dayton as a great place to see a game. No beer sales, however. And Mason does atmosphere really well. They still have the professor/band leader "pimping" up the baseline and their band is really active. The even have singers belting out tunes at breaks like "Living on a Prayer," and so on. After the Gola Mausoleum with commercials on the big screens during time outs, this was much better. "

"The place was empty. Their band, I must say, is pretty good. I could have done without their student section chanting "Richard Sherman" when Jett was shooting freethrows. Seemed a bit racist."

What I took from their message boards is that our team is just a bunch of athletes, our cheerleaders are ugly as hell, and we're all racists.

Proud to be a Patriot.

Yeah--I thought the Green Machine was in particularly good form last night! They play well and play LOUDLY--likely just as effective making it difficult for the visiting team to hear during the time outs at that end of the court as a full section of students. I'm amused that when visiting teams bring their folding chairs and sit away from their bench during time outs, they actually are moving CLOSER to the band!

On another related note, I'd like to see some data on the impact of visitor's shooting foul shots into a background of screaming students. My sense is that IT HAS NO EFFECT other than to give the students a sense that they are participating in the game.

I've always hated Mason's emphasis on bringing in talented cheerleaders. Talent levels tend to be equal and opposite to looks, which is really the point the of cheerleaders.

-when Jett was fouled at the end of regulation, not sure why the refs didn't check to see if 00.9 was the correct time on the clock.
after looking at the replay, 00.9 was the correct time. still, they should have looked at it to confirm.

Although I agree with the overall sentiment that our defense — or lack thereof —loses us most of our games, this would have been an entirely different outcome had Allen and Holloway not shot a combined 5-22 (23%). Patrick has taken some poor shots lately, but he missed some wide open looks he usually knocks down in his sleep.

It may have helped, but St Louis was 13-16 from the field including 5-5 from 3 over the last 15 minutes. When you're a team that consistently loses the TO battle and allows your opponent to shoot that well in an even game, the only way you win is: 1) Other team misses FTs, 2) you shoot 15-16 or 16-16 from the field. In a lot of ways, the only reason we had a chance at the end was because SLU was 9-17 from the FT line.

Was the game aggressively promoted in local media? yes or no?

Has any Mason game been promoted in local media that you could recall? Usually they have a 10 second radio spot on WTOP occasionally and sometimes a tv commercial, but otherwise nothing with nothing. And who knows with how it was on campus, because there were barely any students.

The marketing department within athletics leaves A LOT to be desired. That's another area where a lot of people either need to lose jobs or be reassigned. They could do a lot more.

I wouldn't castigate the marketing department until I knew what their ad buying budget looked like.

Another thing from their boards:
No b*tching about the referees. I'm giving up there as stated after the vcu game. No sense wasting time pondering over something I'll never get. So I've dropped it. But I did not see them as a factor any more then they usually are. Hewitt coached his arse off and I'm not sure the technical was all that deserved.

To their credit, I have seen a number of TV spots on ESPN and other sports channels as well as billboards at most Metro stations in VA as well as on Metro buses. I think they've done a good job with the product they have. One of the things missing has been regular articles in the WaPo and they're not going to send a reporter out to games for a team that's losing.
