GIVING DAY 2023
Conversation with my 5-year old daughter with 30 seconds left last night..

Her, "Daddy, can I go over to high five the players now?"
Me, "Yes, but some may not high five you because they might be sad."
Her, "Why would they be sad?"
Me, "Because we are about to lose the game."
Her, "Don't we always lose?"

Your 2014 George Mason Patriots.

That said, my only ask to those who say they are leaving is that you actually leave. I don't care to judge people or reward you with fancards, but I'd love shorter food lines in the gold room and know parking is a problem on weeknights as it is.

I will be renewing and probably again raising my donation to the PC. Sorry if that disappoints anyone.

You did admit that you will not be going to games in person next year.

Did you not?

So my argument still applies.

If you are watching a game during the 2014-2015 season and we are losing. I truly believe you will flip the channel and your new excuse will be you don't watch us on TV when we are losing.

Ok....keep the little hypothetical future situation going on what I will be doing next year. What ever floats your boat. Yes, there is a good chance if some change in some form isnt made I will think long and hard about not renewing season tickets.

Your obsession is kinda weird....predicting what Ill be doing next year, or what I watch or do...does it really matter to you that much?

As alumni, we should support our program. The problem is TOC doesn't want alum to become "owners" of his prized program. We donate b/c it goes to the student athletes and it's probably not totaly clear that your money goes only to mens bball. So from that standpoint, you, me or anyone not named McKay, is donating to all the Mason student athletes. Not just mens bball. I could be wrong on this, but it sounds like the loop hole TOC looks thru when dealing with alumni pissed at mens bball. Therefore, the only way to speak up is to either form a large group like gmubrian sugguested, or stop buying tickets/donating. However, only one of those hurts the student athlete.

We need change and fast. Take an audit of Hewitts performance. Too many past mistakes from old job are re-surfacing. Hedging your hope on 4 17-18 yr old recruits is very far fetched. Consider this....If the school of engineering hired a new dean and Hewitts bball performance was morphed into the new dean's performance over a three year period, would the new dean still be around?

call me fickle, call me what you want. I had a fan call me a bigger asshole than him last night as I laughed at Paul Hewitt falling down on the floor in the middle of the game last night.

The fact is, our program sucks under our current Coach. I love being in the A10, and expected stiffer competition but let's be realists, this team would barely be in the top 4 in the CAA this year. I have no problem not going to the Dance this year as I expected a tough A-10. Not an 0 for 8 start in the A-10. I was hoping for us around 6th or 7th place (a modest first year in the league). Not only are we not going to finish 6th or 7th, we will be dead last. And on top of being dead last, we are getting embarrassed at home.

I have a big problem that the program has gone downhill direction 3 straight years. There is NO signs of hope, and if Hewitt is here next year, we may be 0 for the season (aka Towson a few years back). Why should I drop $2k/year for a shitty investment? I will get nothing out of it. Keep taking stabs and call me a fairweather fan Gunnie, if you must I call it being smart with my own finances. I didn't call you names when you finally re-emerged on the boards at mid-season.

They need to fire Hewitt now. Keeping him around another year will lead to years worth of rebuilding. The way things are looking now, I can't see Mason returning to the NCAA tournament until Jalen Jenkins is a senior. This program can't be rebuilt with 4 new freshmen and expect a winner next year, or even the following year. It's just not likely.

"Personally Im all but decided that I wont renew my season tickets next year unless Hewitt is gone. Id rather spend my money on something that I enjoy and have fun at, instead of an apathetic evening where Im just going more to sit with a few friends and listen to the band. Ill send my donation to the Green Machine instead" - Patriotfan49 - 2/6/14

Where did I say you can't be upset? Don't stretch what I'm saying.

Everyone should be upset! But when you say your not going to root for your team, and stop attending, that to me is bandwagon territory.

The definition of a bandwagon fan is only supporting winning teams and changing allegiances based on wins/losses. This is the first losing season since 1997/98, the year before I started at Mason. I, like many people on this Board, have never experienced a losing Mason season before. I think this has made so many of you act like such spoiled brats.

Everyone is confusing what supporting the team is and a lot are trying to make the argument that pulling back money/season ticket purchases is somehow supportive. That's BS, just admit it. You are making a business decision that you are not getting the proper return on your investment. And that makes sense, we all understand it. But you don't get to have your cake and eat it too. You can't claim you are making that decision because you are a fan.

Those of us claiming to be "fans" are supposedly fans of the SCHOOL and the TEAM. Neither of those entities is TOC or Hewitt. I too, am a 49ers fans and have waited patiently through the lean years to enjoy the last 3 seasons. I would absolutely be a bandwagon fan if I stopped supporting them and only started supporting them when they started winning again.

The problem with this discussion is that everyone is using different definitions of "support". I do not agree that donating more money makes you a better fan than someone who donates less, as that is based on financial circumstances mostly. I can tell you there were years when I didn't have the money to donate and instead spent my money to travel to support the team in Richmond, at JMU, at American, in Dayton, in Philly, etc. etc. etc. and I did not see any of the people with floor seats (except probably Brian) at those games. I now donate more but am able to travel less because of life circumstances. Stop talking about money, we are talking about support.

The best support we can give, that all fans can give, is to attend as many games as possible and physically have your butts in the seat. That's what I mean by support and that's the only type of support (unless you are a high money donor who can buy a locker room or something) that is directly felt by the players. Walking into a packed Patriot center and knowing the crowd has your back or walking into a hostile environment, far away from home, and seeing the green and gold behind the team bench. That actually has a positive impact on the play of our team.

Many of you are threatening to take away that type of support, and that is why you are being called bandwagon fans. The money is a whole nother issue, but you are delirious if you think giving our program less money will somehow help it. See some of you at homecoming!

Yes I know I said that, I didnt deny that. I reiterated that I was contemplating said decision.

Im not sure what you are looking for? Or what the point is?

I can understand a little more if TOC or the president had come out publicly supporting Hewitt by giving him a contract extension, but at this point we have no idea what they are thinking and don't know what they are going to do or know the financial situation we are in to fire the coach and eat 1.5 million and then try I go out and hire a guy that will make the more fickle fans excited to come back. And yes you are being a fickle fan for threatening to pull out after one losing season.

In 2005 our athletic budget was 10.3 million, 2011 it was $18.4 million. We spent $20 million on renovations to the Patriot Center (with more to come) and our basketball budget has grown from $2.4 million to $3 million in three years.

The argument that we aren't trying to grow something, that our AD is complacent and just wants the status quo is a false one. Essentially you are saying you are pulling your donations because you don't like Hewitt.

Here's my point:

Let's say that's what you end up doing.

Let's say you are watching a game on TV. We're down by 10-15.

I predict that you will flip to ESPN or something and make a new excuse that you only watch when we are winning.

Why are you worried about what I do? Or even predicting what I will be doing in a year?

Im not sure what you are trying to get across here. I sit in person and watch the games like last night.....I watch the games when they are on TV....when we lose and while we are losing.....

Besides being creepy, what are you getting at?

I was at the game last night. The negative vibes and comments coming from the crowd makes going to games not enjoyable to sit at anymore.

I think the opposite.

Its a conversation mostly between people that still show up even though we are losing (and losing bad some times) and still donate and want the best for Mason. Id be more worried if we just sat here and were complacent in the losing and direction. These people care, even if you have a personal agenda against certain ones, or a different opinion. I dont think anybody who doesnt care about Mason is on this board.

These are good conversations to have. Im of the opinion, you cant really complain about others if you arent even doing the same as them. Just seems odd to try and disprove ones fandom when they donate, go to games, show support and you dont.

Let's be honest, future recruits are judging us based on the product on the court, not on anything we say. Besides, if I were a recruit, I would be concerned if the fanbase wasn't upset; that shows no one cares about basketball at George Mason.

Your belief that what you say on these boards have any effect on the outside world highlights your delusions of self importance and reality.

Look clown, you can't criticize 49's fandom when he does the following things that you admittedly don't:

1. Donates to the program
2. Buys season tickets
3. Attends games

I get that we all have different circumstances. I haven't had season tickets since I moved away from NVa because I knew I wouldn't be able to make it to even half the games. I don't have a ton of spare cash to throw at the program and know many fans are in the same boat.

But your insistence on judging 49 and calling him a bandwagon fan for pulling back on his commitment to the program -- when the totality of your commitment seems to be posting on a message board -- makes you look like a fool.

I don't always agree with 49's posts, but I'm never going to question his fandom.
