GIVING DAY 2023
Alright my .02.

The Good: JMU and ODU, and at VT. "Local" games with an old school vibe and playing a school in the state we haven't played in ages. VT is a nice power 5 opportunity. We all like playing JMU and ODU, and having our final four celebration against ODU is a highlight of the nonconference season.

The Meh: The MTE is an absolute meh. Ohio is a projection of 146 Torvik and its a midmajor tournament. I guess thats the best we can do at this juncture. We'll see if we get Loyola Marymount or Florida Atlantic which will be an okay game for us. Just no real opportunity to move the needle in the MTE which makes it a meh.

The Bad: Just too many buy games, Winthrop, Penn, Catwba, New Hampshire (yikes), Loyola Maryland, Wofford, Cornell. Cornell and Winthrop will be better buy games, but all in all 6 d1 buys, plus Catawba and Jacksonville (I know that one was "given" to us), just makes this an unexciting home slate.

We did not find a 3rd home and home partner or a neutral game to replace one of the buy games which is disappointing to me. Hopefully we can crush this schedule and when NET rankings come out, be in the range to make a move for at large consideration. Going to be tough though.

Have to win all of those to stay in the at large conversation. ALL of them.
Yea, and we know how unlikely that is (obviously rooting for that) with such a new team. Just look at last year.

The current climate devalues the OOC for teams like us, it sucks. I care more about finishing at/near top of league and getting hot going into A10 tournament.

Assuming the team turns out to be good, I’m gonna predict this OOC schedule will be better for the metrics than last year’s.

No all-downside road game like ECU, the P4 road game is far more winnable than Duke/Marquette, and a bunch of teams we should be able to demolish.

Avoid a CMU-style banana peel, maximize margin of victory unlike last season, lose absolutely no more than two games (at VT and perhaps Loyola Marymount/FAU, no idea how good they’ll be), and we should at least have a chance with another strong A-10 showing.

If we can’t do those things against this schedule we weren’t good enough to deserve an at-large regardless, so see everyone in Pittsburgh.
