I think Hewitt just confuses some of our posters because we're not used to having a 6-6 PG (Jackson) or a 6-7 SG (Mayimba), so people automatically assume it's not gonna work out.

Lockett, Mayimba, and Jackson can all play multiple positions, not sure why some on here have to apply a concrete SG or SF next to their name to feel better about the roster.

How exactly does assigning a position to a player make anybody feel better about the roster? I don't care if we put five small forwards or five walk-ons out there as long as we win.

Semantics aside, teams would be wise to play a packed zone against us and dare us to shoot from outside. Lockett, Mayimba and Jackson might help a little as incoming freshmen (regardless of their designated positions), but our returning players shot a collective 32% from behind the arc last year — and even that is skewed because Holloway shot 41%. Take his stats out, and our number drops to 21%.

I've been saying it since he signed, and I still believe it: Mayimba eventually is going to get a lot of run at the SG spot.

The biggest thing is he's quick enough to defend the 2. He's also an underrated shooter, and we all know he's an athletic freak. Once he improves his handle, you won't be able to keep him off the floor.

For now, I figure VG will back up Pat and Mayimba will get his minutes at the 3.

Completely agree on Mayimba, theres no doubt in my mind that he takes minutes at the 2 this year and moving forward. Funny thing is that he's taller than Lockett but I don't see Lockett playing the 2 at all. I think Lockett may have the hardest transition on the whole team, played almost exclusively in the post in HS, will not be asked to play on the perimeter. No matter his game or size everyone seems to rave about his mental make up and desire for the game, 2 things this roster has sorely missed since
Pearson and Morrison walked out that door.

Folarin Campbell > Patrick Holloway

Wouldn't the more apt comparison be to Dre Smith? Regardless that team had Dre Smith, Jon Vaughan and Folarin Campbell.

In other words, theres no comparing the two teams.

Forget Copes on offense. Anything we get from him is pure bonus at this point. I just hope our staff realizes this and adjusts accordingly.

However, if Copes looks at good as everyone says he does, his defense backing up the other guys taking chances for steals could be extremely significant.

I'd love to see us institute a no uncontested layups policy on defense. Between Copes, Thompson, Porter, Marko, Royal and Jenkins we have plenty of bigs to rotate in and out. Just the physical punishment we should be able to dole out will make a lot of teams settle for jumpers instead of attacking the paint.

As for the SG and SF positions, I'm not even sure Hewitt refers to them that way. If I remember he usually in press conferences just calls those his wing players, so I think they are largely interchangeable. As everyone else has said, if we can find some guys beyond Holloway who can hit from deep we have a chance to be decent, otherwise we're in trouble.

If VG can solidify his focus on defense, I think we have ourselves two guards that can light it up from downtown. Also contingent on if Hewitt remembers to play VG.

If this team can do the "toughness" it takes to do the "no layup rule" by all means. There were several players who were just sieves on defense. I'd love to see Porter and Thompson "regulate" things when teams drive.

Beyond Holloway, I'm not sure who can be a 3 point shooter of our wing players (Mayimba may develop into one, Jackson?), however, another shooter is actually Corey Edwards who was very good from 2 years ago. He only hit 27% last year, but was 50% 2 years ago. It'd be nice if Edwards can be relied upon as an option.

Well if we want/need to play tough nasty defense with these guys...can we poach Jerry Wainright from Marquette?

Sherrod was leading the team in turnovers and VG still couldn't get off the bench. That's pretty telling to me.

So are you saying VG will most likely finish his career at George Mason as a cheerleader on the bench? He commits to Larranaga originally then stays when Hewitt convinces him to do so, but plays only garbage minutes near the end of the 1st half. Terrible way to end a collegiate career if it continues to happen in this season.

Probably should have transferred like Paris Bennett, or Vertrail Vaughns when he had the chance.

On VG, I can give Hewitt benefit of the doubt. He did look lost on D alot. Hopefully, third time is the charm.

Maybe it won't I don't know.

Fact is his off the court stuff detailed his sophomore year. If i found out at that age I was going to be father 5 months before it happened I wouldnt be able to focus on hoops either.

Hope the best for the kid, maybe it comes together this year.

Hewitt mentioned at one of the Q/A sessions in the past that he offered to help VG transfer on more than one occasion. Hewitt said VG wanted to finish what he started here at Mason. He's looked good this off season and I hope he gets rewarded for his loyalty to the program with a senior year he can be proud of.

Woah that's news to me, had no idea and that totally makes sense! Good luck to him and hopefully he can see some more time this year.
