"That netted him a D1 scholarship to George Mason, where Hancock hit a three-point shot two years ago that propelled his team to a postseason win. That season Mason also had the longest winning streak in the country. But when the head coach that recruited him, Jim Larranaga, left for Miami, Hancock – who has said he would have stayed at George Mason if Larranaga had stayed put – decided to look around instead. 'I at least needed to look at my options,' Hancock recalls of that time period.

There could be millions of reasons.
Perhaps he simply wanted to explore his options and ended up being persuaded by the allure of Pitino’s coaching.
Additionally, Louisville almost guarantees a tournament appearance every year.
Following Coach L to a bottom-feeder ACC team like Miami would have been a risky move. It’s uncertain if Coach L even offered him a spot at Miami.
However, if Mason had retained Coach L, with a preseason top 25 team returning, the odds of making a successful run were quite high.
It’s uncertain whether Luke would have even considered exploring other options if Coach hadn’t left.

From what I could tell on the rosters it looks like Coach L already had 11 of 13 scholarships filled when he walked into Miami. He needed a PG and took Shane Larkin, which seems to have worked out for him.
Such a different time, it’s almost unrecognizable.
Tyler projected as #35 in NBA draft:
Strengths: Kolek is a tough-minded guard whose skill level as a scorer and vision as a passer made him the engine of one of the top offenses in college basketball over the past two seasons.
Weaknesses: He is not the biggest nor most physically gifted floor general, lacking great length and explosiveness. That makes it difficult for him to score in traffic at times or hold his own against some matchups defensively.
The verdict: Kolek picked opposing defenses apart last season out of pick-and-rolls, whipping the ball around to shooters, getting to floaters and proving opportunistic in shooting; he hit 39% of his shots from beyond the arc. His average tools might make him divisive among NBA teams, but his approach and feel for the game will appeal to franchises looking for a backup point guard.

It will be interesting to see if Kolek can carve out some consistent minutes as the back up PG for the Knicks.
He’ll probably get a two-way contract and play mostly in the G-League for now, but he will have a chance to make the roster at least.

I believe that Dave Paulsen's legacy at Mason will be his high school recruiting including the following players (several of whom signed here unheralded):
Drafted in the NBA: Jordan Miller and Tyler Kolek
Not drafted but playing in the NBA G League: Justin Kier and Jaire Grayer
All-time great Mason players: Otis Livingston II and Josh Oduro
Mason career leader in blocked shots: AJ Wilson
EBA single game scoring leader: Javon Greene
Mr. SportsCenter: Ian Boyd
1st Team All-MVC: Xavier Johnson
It's too bad that Paulsen did not augment his high school recruiting by effectively recruiting transfers.

I don't believe that Paulsen recruited either Moore or Thompson. They were on the roster when he arrived from Bucknell.
Correct. Hewitt recruits that stayed with Paulsen.
That is why they only made the G league and not the NBA

The Knicks signed Tyler Kolek to a four-year, $9.1 million contract, a league source said. The deal has a team option on the fourth season.

Truly amazing that we had a resident expert on these boards who was confident he'd be a flop at Mason because he played in the "wrong" league in Rhode Island.

Pretty impressive for our former player Tyler Kolek. As you may know he was a second round pick of the NY Knicks. In his first game he impressed many people who think they got a steal. 7 Points, 7 assists and 7 rebound, 0 turnover in 29 minutes. Knicks were very impressed the way he sees the court.
