The Terps were picked #5 in preseason Big 10 polls. They are currently ranked #21 in the nation.

In a preseason prospectus Thomas Beindit wrote, “The Terps aren’t going to be picked to win the league or make the Final Four, but this team has a chance to win plenty of games and make some noise in March. There’s talent, experience, and enough upside for Maryland to take off this season.”

The roster has gone through major changes from last year. The Terps added 2 new recruits in 4 star Ike Cornish and 4 star Julian Reese. Six transfers complete the rebuild of the roster. The six transfers are 6’8” Pavlo Dziuba (Arizona St.), 6’6” Xavier Green (ODU), 6’3” Ian Martinez (Utah), 5’10” Fatts Russell (Rhode Island), 6”11” Qudus Wahab (Georgetown), and 6”7” Simon Wright (Elon). One key returnee is Eric Ayala who averaged 15.1 ppg and 4.3 reb per game last season.

Maryland is currently 3-0 on the season. Statistical leaders are Fatts Russell (16.3 ppg), Eric Ayala (15.3 ppg & 4.3 reb) Qudus Wahab (13.7 ppg & 9.7 reb), Donta Scott (8.0 ppg & 7.7 reb), and Julian Reese (8.0 & 5 reb ppg).

Wins: Quinnipiac (83-69), GW (71-64), Vermont (68-57)
Losses:

Roster: https://umterps.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster
Stats: https://umterps.com/documents/2021/11/9//2021_Combined_Stats.pdf?id=12263

The Terps average 74.0 points per game while allowing 63.3. They are shooting 41.2% from the floor and 23.4% from 3. Opponents are shooting 39.0% from the field and 31.9% from 3. Maryland has out rebounded opponents by 12.7 boards per game.

The game is on The Big Ten Network.

My prediction: You heard it here first. We fear no one, especially a damn turtle! GMU 75 - Terps 74. The nation starts to take notice.

Discuss.

The Oduro v. Wahab match up should be very interesting. Wahab is by far the best big man that Oduro has faced. He needs to stay out of foul trouble — I can see UMD going after Oduro early when they have the ball.

then it’ll be up to the guards to help protect Oduro by not giving anyone an easy entry pass into the post. Make them lob it over the top and use the baseline to cut off Wahab’s options.

This will probably be our first loss, but I’m hoping for a wire to wire fight and going into the MTE with some confidence.

This one is going to be tough, but for once Mason has the height to matchup with a power 5 school in general. It won’t be easy as the first few games and hopefully Mason comes out and punches Maryland quick in the mouth. The Terps have slept through their first few games for the most part even though they were victorious.

I’d love to see Mason sneak a win, and I’m skeptical. But if there’s any time to get one, nows a good one. If they win they’ll definitely start to get national attention.

Walk-On
Hi everyone, full time reader, limited contributor here but been following Mason basketball for over 20 years now... so the Morgan St game is the first one I missed this season but I already got my tickets to the Maryland game, section 126 near the Patriots bench. If Mason limits turnovers and plays with the same intensity we've seen on defense over the first 3 games, I think it's possible to walk out of there with the W. I'm still sour over the GMU/Maryland NCAA tournament game back in 2001 where we were up with 2 minutes remaining. This could be the closure I need to move on from my hatred of Maryland. The way a lot of you feel towards vcu is how I feel towards Maryland.

Kenpom has Maryland favored by 16. That's down by 2 from their projected spread before our game with Morgan State.

(side note: Penn won by 5 at Bucknell in their last game).

hah, yeah that Maryland game made me hate UMD for years too. I had just transferred to GMU at the time and following the team and then actually getting to watch them go the NCAAs got me hooked. Ever since Gary left, I kind of lost interest in the rivalry but I still want GMU to win all our contests.

Wahab is probably a legit NBA talent, there will be some really interesting matchups in this one. This will be our first look at how we shoot away from home. Gonna learn a lot about this squad in this game.

Regardless of the outcome I think it’s a one possession game.

^Exactly. I haven't enjoyed watching games this much in 15 years. The Bell's Two-Hearted sold at the concourse helps improve the experience, of course. I'm waddling down to Coyote Grille to catch Wednesday's showdown.
