Changes coming to EagleBank Arena?

BACK IN MY DAY the timeouts were all preplanned...some went to the cheerleaders, one each half went to the dance team, and the rest went to the band. If it was a quick timeout called by the other team (so not a media time out) then 9/10 the band was expected to play IMMEDIATELY. They had a big white board that told you which chart to have up so you could be ready to play as soon as the time out happened. So you can't always pick which song would be best when you're trying to get 60+ people to play in unison in under 30 seconds.

Other bands at other arenas have this problem too. Sort of the nature of the beast. I do agree that Doc sometimes features people a little *too* much and stuff can get stale...e.g. why they were playing "livin' on a prayer" until 2016.

I do remember in his first season here at the vcu game we specifically told him NOT to schedule "rock n roll part II" because the vcu fans would eat it up. A quick timeout happened and he didn't have a song picked outbeforehand, so he just shouted that chart up for us to play. It was a disaster. He's much better now.

(Also always a good time to point out that vcu's "fight song" was written by an out of control pedophile who did prison time in Vietnam and that's why major sports teams don't use it anymore, except for them)
Can confirm, pretty accurate from my experience. There is also someone in the band who stands near Doc Nix and wears a headset to communicate with people like the Masonettes about who does what during which timeouts. I couldn't tell you who makes the call about which songs (or "charts" in green machine talk) to play but the band has at least 2 charts on deck at all times.

To anyone on the boards who has been or is currently a member of the pep band all I can offer is a heartfelt gracias for everything you have done, past and present. We do have the best band in college basketball.

Thanks!

That probably has more to do with the government wanting to know where you are at all times, and after talking to you, I don't blame them.

Hey now - I think you would be more of interest to them than me. ;)
I have provided a detailed report about you both to the government, so we should see who they are more interested in very shortly.

Winning cures all. Outreach will barely move the needle. Attendance and atmosphere won't change until the record does. Even the year we rain through OOC playing cupcakes, we put quite a few in for the A10 opener against vcu. Granted we got killed and attendance immediately went back down to like 4,000 for the following games but if we can rack up some wins early on against decent teams you'll see a good bump in number of people and their volume.

Separately, does anyone know how the deals with the sponsors on the tarps work? Like, can we take them off if we need to and we just don't pay the sponsor for that game? I don't really expect anyone to know the legalese of the contracts, although I'm sure some "insider" on here will give me whatever they've heard from the Dippin' Dots stand kid.

Anybody know when various ticket packages go on sail, and what site to go to when they do?

mini plans are usually a September thing but you can submit an inquiry form on gomason.com and ask about them as it could be different If demand is higher or something.

If I had to guess, this is probably an annual deal with those sponsors since they dont' really change game to game. Its a good question to ask, especially if demand goes up with a good product.

There is an obvious precedent in the state. UVA replaced University Hall (approx 8,500 seats) with JPJ Arena in 2006 (seats approx. 15,000 for basketball). JPJ cost about $130 to build (likely $175 -200 MM if built today). Paul Tudor Jones gave $35 MM for construction costs. The arena is named after his father.

kind of funny, seeing as 95% of people probably think it's named for the "father of the American Navy" John Paul Jones (who knew Thomas Jefferson, who founded UVA, so that would make perfect sense)

The other 5% think it's named for JPJ from Zeppelin :)
