vcu point guard Briante Weber was issued a summons for petit larceny, a misdemeanor, and has been suspended for the Rams’ opening game of the coming basketball season.

A copy of the incident report provided by vcu police, who issued the summons, indicates that an iPhone 5 valued at $200 was stolen at Cary Street Gym at 101 S. Linden St. The estimated value of the phone is the threshold beyond which petit larceny becomes grand larceny, a felony.

A court document lists the offense date as July 24. Weber was ordered to appear in Richmond’s Manchester General District Court, where a hearing is scheduled for Sept. 25.

Not trying to act like anybody's dad here, but perhaps we can stay above the fray on this one? All sports fans live in glass houses, after all.

well you can blame a kid who leads the nation in steals.

This actually is a bad thing. Briante is a player the fuels off of emotion and anger. I'm sure student fans all year are going to pull out cell phones during games. This will just energize him and play harder.

On another point, I see that he only got a 1 game suspension. if a Mason player would have done the same offense, I would think that the supsension would have been more harsh than 1 game.

He's only been charged at this point. Perhaps the university is merely waiting for the resolution of the case to levy additional sanctions?

iPhone 5 is actually a $575 phone (anyone who has broken a phone and not had insurance knows the pain of buying a new phone without a new two year contract). The $200 price tag is just the subsidized price. They went easy on him.

I believe that under Virginia law, the theft of an item valued at $200 or more is considered grand larceny. So, I assume that the used iPhone 5 was actually valued under $200 which, as previously stated, certainly appears to be lower than fair market value.

If Weber were a Mason student-athlete, do you think that he would have been suspended for just 1 game?

At this point, he'd be suspended indefinitely until his case worked its way through the legal system, which is essentially what is happening at vcu.

I'll be shocked if the university doesn't tack on additional games if he either pleads guilty or is convicted. One game for stealing somebody else's property is pretty light.

But if it stays at one game, it's a clear statement that Shaka is running the show and both the prez and AD are letting him make the call on punishment. That would never happen at Mason.

Jim,

Obviously as a resident of suburban Richmond you are closer to this situation than I am, but it now appears that Weber will be subject to vcu's Student Code of Conduct - see

Based on my reading of this honor code, any further suspensions or other sanctions imposed on Weber would be determined by the Office of Student Conduct & Academic Integrity (not by the school President or AD).

That's fun. I just met the OSCAI at my new place of employment and I believe the term "eat you up and spit you out" was used.

Don't remember and don't have time to look up - when Andre Cornelius stole a girlfriend's credit card, wasn't the ultimate "value" if the crime less than $200, and didn't we suspend for like 10 games? It will be interesting to see how this compares when all shakes out.

Yes, he charged $60 worth of gas and groceries on the stolen card and got a 10-game suspension.

Hmmm. $60 vs. $575. Will be interesting to see how this plays out...

To be fair, Cornelius was originally charged with credit card larceny and credit card fraud. Prosecutors dropped the first charge when he agreed to plead guilty to the second.

Still, your point is valid. It will be a pretty loud statement of vcu's priorities if he pleads guilty to larceny and only misses one game.

Think of it like a "cost of living adjustment" (to early for me to think of something funny), when comparing Northern Virginia and Richmond. Down there it really is no big deal.

vcu and Shaka should grow some balls and smack him with atleast a 6 game suspension. 1 game suspension is for missing team meetings, not stealing a freaking phone.

Absolutely absurd and disgusting he only gets a 1 game ban. vcu BBall rules that city and they are showing a win at all costs attitude with this BS. Pshhh. The worst thing is that he is a Senior this year and supposed to be leader of the team. What does this show to the entire rest of the team and young guys...... ohhh its ok to steal..... you will just get a smack on the wrist.

Pathetic display vcu. Pathetic. But I'm not really surprised anyways.

Highly disappointed in vcu's administration.

Mason suspended Cornelius indefinitely till the legal outcome was decided, then levied the game suspensions. Granted the charges were greater.....but......still.

It's almost as if they reduced the charge, slapped a quickie suspension and then hope it gets plead down to unlawful taking or some even lower bs charge that they can overlook....

Theft is theft.......esp if it was from another student.
