Says something about sticking with a guy despite a lot of criticism. Every situation is different obviously, but I recall Mooney taking serious heat not long ago. Seems Richmond made the right call.
Yeah but he had already made back to back NCAA tournaments including a sweet 16 and a few NIT quarterfinals before those billboards went up. A lot of goodwill was made already.
As a point of comparison, Mooney was 33 when he took over Richmond. It was his fourth year as a head coach (2 at division 3 Beaver College, 1 at Air Force) before taking over a 14-15 Richmond team. His head coaching record at the time was 42-39 (although 18-12 at Air Force the previous season).
It took him 3 seasons to get a winning record at Richmond (16-15), four to get his first 20 win season and then he went to two back-to-back NCAAs, with a sweet 16 in year 6.
Since then he’s been in 3 NITs, a round of 32 and missed out on a likely NIT/possible shot at the NCAA in the COVID season with an overall record of 314-246 (154-127 in conference play). Postseason 3-3 NCAA, 6-3 in the NIT.
If this is English’s record here after 18 seasons, would we take it?
