In
NCAA Division I men’s basketball, a player can appear in
up to 4 games in a season and still take a redshirt year.
Key Points:
- ✅ You can play in 4 or fewer games and still qualify for a redshirt.
- ❌ If you play in 5 or more games, you lose the redshirt for that season.
- This rule has been in effect since the 2018–19 season.
- It applies to regular season and postseason games.
There is also a
medical redshirt (hardship waiver) option if a player suffers a season-ending injury, but that has separate criteria.
