Say what you will, this was actually my least favorite game of the season. Yes, worse than losing to ODU, LaSalle, Fordham, and watching GMUBrian curse our South Dakota trip. I am thoroughly depressed. Although the season is over (although anything can happen in the A-10 tourney), I agree with the sports psychologist comment. These guys play hard, and are tired due to a weak bench and crazy scheduling, but they have lost their mojo. Never too late to get it back.

I always miss the second half of these Wednesday night games, but the slow start and Oduro missing FTs in the beginning seems to be the difference in the end.

And I see Tom saying we didn’t score for a huge stretch. That never helps.

You only say that because we lost all those games. Although, winning all of them and being swept by vcu would probably hurt even more

Nah, I say it because I watched the second half. It just got depressing.

I watched the first half and was depressed. What I’d say is vcu has superior athletes at every position and you saw that play out tonight. If English is going to beat vcu he’s going to have to recruit some better athletes. My hope is Fernandez is that guy, one who can take a team overplaying the perimeter and turn it into a dunk before the defense realizes what happened.

Mason took a 6 point lead with 12:56 left. After that, Mason had 11 fouls called against them to vcu’s 2 fouls until the vcu technical at 1:01.

11-2

vcu leads the A10 in fouls per games, but somehow was able to play incredibly disciplined during that stretch. Remarkable.

The game was there for the taking. Can't ask for more than that, but still frustrating we didn't play better. That 16-0 run by vcu was so discouraging, and once again, we were too careless with the ball again.

Ticket is worn out. Single digits in 4 of his last 5 games.

Another stat that jumps out aside from the 16-0 run I mentioned: Cooper was 1-7 from behind the arc and took zero shots inside it.

Several of our players are one-dimensional, and it makes it so easy to game-plan us, especially this late in the season when there is so much film on us. Guard Cooper out to the line, let XJ and Polite shoot from there.

Ke has talked over and over avout metrics and how the only one "allowed to" shoot 2pt jumpers is schaetz. So why would other teams even bother covering for the midrange jumper? They know we are only going to shoot threes, so they extend the D and dont let us, knowing that nobody is going to take a pump fake and then shoot a mid-range jumper.
I would add that Frazier to the permission list. And, he can put the ball on the floor and get to the basket.

Ace Baldwin and Others made vulgar hand gestures of them eating some sort of porridge during the game after they made shots. It was obscene and uncalled for and I hid my childrens eyes from the screen

In all seriousness we can’t bitch too much about fouls. OTis got called for two of those and it was because he was incapable of even trying to move his feet to defend. CKE let him hear it.

Only crazy bad call was on XJ when Baldwin flopped after making a layup. That was wowzers

Good point about Cooper. And while I would like to see him drive more, it seems like he rarely has enough of an edge over his defender where he can finish with confidence. Consequently, he'll often pick his dribble up under the basket, and then frantically look for an open teammate on the perimeter. And not too long after that, the play results in a turnover.

Gotta get more points from Ticket and Cooper (combined 0-2 from 2, 3-14 from 3; 11 pts in 73 minutes).

On the positive side, Polite and Frazier combined for 13 pts in 26 minutes...finally got something from the bench.

Ticket looked like he had no legs when he shot from the outside. Playing tons of minutes and having to guard every team’s best player takes its toll.

If you told me these stats and Oduro was super quiet, and you told me Mason only lose by 6. All things considered that’s pretty good.

nowhere enough to compete with the top of the conference, but it’s at least something at this stage of the season.

13 and 7 from Oduro on 6-8 shooting isn’t exactly super quiet. It’s not what we are used to, but that’s a solid outing.

Cooper going 1-7 is supremely disappointing, but at the same time 8 from Frazier and 5 from Polite is infinitely more bench production than we are used to (which is a sad commentary that we need to celebrate 13 bench points). So there is that.

Big difference in the game: vcu 20-27 from the line versus 6-12 from Mason. vcu with more made free throws than we attempted.
