Still excited about the JF verbal, but it got me thinking some this weekend of what the future of Mason recruiting will look like - especially with the new transfer rules. Not sure if this deserves it's own thread or not...

I don't think it's out of bounds to think a player like Justyn could be a transfer candidate if everything goes to plan. Obviously I would love for him to stay 4 years and win every A10 honor available, but that's unlikely given the landscape now with transfer rules.

So, if your a top 50-100 guy, is going to a George Mason where you can get 30 minutes a game early on better than going to NC State or Florida and getting 12 minutes a game? I would think so. Is this going to be the strategy going forward? I mean, if a kid can play at a high level for us for a year or two, I would rather have that production than never having him at all.

I don't think you can do it with every scholarship, but I think 1 guy like that a year that will get early minutes and might leave after a year or two wouldn't be a bad thing. Again, would love for him to stay, but I'm not sure how likely that is.

Would love to hear what KE's thoughts are on this and how the transfer rules effect their recruiting strategy.

I believe KE has tweeted his thoughts about this. I feel like it was something about getting the players to completely buyin and creating an environment where they don’t want to leave.
Obviously he said it a lot better and more confidently.

I tend to agree with you, but he already passed up high major offers.

CKE knows its about relationships and kids won't want to leave the Gonzaga of East. Instead, they will flock to it. However, for me, it's more about keeping CKE around to build the Gonzaga East.

The 247 Composite (averages rankings across the major recruiter sites) hasn't updated the commitment yet, but if you use their class calculator to do it, it pushes Mason to 38.48 points for the class.

That would be good for the 26th spot currently.

It also doesn't include Cam Walker, which Rivals doesn't have listed either. But most sites won't rank/give points unless a recruit is in the top 500ish range.

You forgot to factor in that they will first drop him down to 2 stars for committing to a mid-major before they tally the total points.

If JF leaves after 2 years, I’m hoping his destination is the NBA, not another college program

It seems from the blog post he’s not necessarily looking to transfer (in fact, the chaos of the transfer portal is one of the reasons he chose Mason).

But CKE is going to have to prove he can deliver to keep players like Fernandez around: mentorship and relationships, yes, but also scheduling and results on the court will also be important. Hard to make the NBA when no one sees you play.

You know....I don't think they will on this one. (& I get you were half-jesting but it's a good question too)

We all hate when they drop our kids, but there is some logic dropping a kid who hasn't been highly scouted and the sites rate higher but the coaches/offers don't. In this case, Justyn's playing for teams that have had no lack of eyeballs on them and the major offers haven't been missing.

Combine that w/there seems to be some nat'l buzz around what CKE is doing so far. He'll have to prove it on the court or they'll turn on him fast, but right now I think the media is on the English bandwagon. Not that it ultimately matters, but I think his play will dictate the final rankings in his case.

Nice so then a Top 25 class so far?

It will also be interesting to see how the NIL rules factor into these decisions. It could literally turn into a dollars and cents discussion immediately whereas in the past, it was down the road a few years.

That's incredible. I never thought i'd see the day Mason had a T-25 recruting class. A 4-star? Yeah, maybe. But a top 25 class overall just never entered my head.

That said, I'd be curious what the best A-10 recruiting class has been. I'll try to look into it later. But just for the sake of mentioning it here and now, I bet there have been other A10 teams that got into the T-25. But how high? that's something I'd be curious if we could shoot for with CKE at the helm.

26th right now (no points for Walker) behind Stanford & Creighton and ahead of Ohio Univ. & Nebraska.

It's a point in time though and larger classes will count for more points. Texas, Florida, USC & Villanova are currently 30th-33rd, so as more kids in the top 150 commit, rankings will change.

Historically though, here's where we've finished
2021 - 116th (include Mbaye) 7th in A10
2020 - No results (no commits ranked)
2019 - 131st (Oduro & XJ), 8th in A10
2018 - 171st (Hartwell), 11th in A10
2017 - 123rd (Mar & Calixte), 7th in A10

The larger point is we've now two highly ranked players (Top 100 & Top 250) and been a while since we've seen that. The measuring stick for rankings (for Mason) is the 2011 class (ranking not quality).

Transfers aren't included either so far from an apples-to-apples comparison.

Hewitt era by comparison was
2011 - 44th (Copes, Gray & Edwards), 1st in A10
2012 - 87th (Holloway), 2nd in A10
2013 - No results again

Best rated or best in terms of most effective?

Because there is 5 star Cart’Are Gordon and then there is 2 star Obi Toppin…

For 2021 Dayton is ranked 22 with 2 4 stars and 2 3 stars.
