Gotta think that Hurley would be a target of a power conference school if a job opens up. On the off-chance he got our job, I
can't imagine it being more than a
stop-over for him.

Gotta think B. Hurley would be interested in something a little higher than G Mas.

I never considered Jay a serious candidate -- despite what Yahoo! might think -- simply because the timing is awkward as hell trying to go from the NBA to college.

Unless Stevens was going to let him out of his contract, and I doubt seriously he'd be willing to do that, we'd have to wait until at least the end of the NBA regular-season to finalize the hire and have Jay start assembling a staff. That's assuming the Celtics miss the playoffs, which in the dog-sh!t Eastern Conference is difficult to do.

No matter how much we may want the guy, no way you can basically idle your program for two months. Gotta hire a head coach, let him hire a staff, then get them out re-recruiting our current players and recruits ASAP.

You're probably correct, but on the other hand, the NBA regular season ends on April 15th, and the Celtics would not make the playoffs if the season ended today.

Wow, my bad. Don't know why, I just assumed the NBA reg season ran into May.

I guess it's easy to forget they stretch out the playoffs for 127 days because of TV.

If Jay Larranaga is hired, why couldn't he begin to assemble his staff before the end of the Celtics' season? He could hire an experienced assistant, who could run the operation until Jay officially reports to the program.

Can you actually hire a guy who is still under contract to another organization? Somebody smarter than me -- which is basically everyone -- needs to answer that one.

It seems to happen frequently in football, when a college hires an NFL coordinator as its new head coach.

We can stop with the Jay L stuff. It was just announced on WEEI, that he expressed no interest....

At least that's why my sources in the NE said....

http://nesn.com/2015/03/brad-stevens-george-mason-would-be-smart-to-pursue-assistant-jay-larranaga/:

"BOSTON — Celtics assistant coach Jay Larranaga reportedly is in the mix for the vacant head-coaching position at George Mason, and he received a glowing recommendation Monday from C’s bench boss Brad Stevens.

Stevens said he hadn’t heard about the school’s reported interest in his top lieutenant, but that Larranaga certainly is a deserving candidate.

'I have no idea,' Stevens said before the Celtics’ matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers at TD Garden. 'They’d be smart to pursue him. I don’t know what his interests are, and I don’t want to speak for him, but anybody would be smart to pursue him.'"

You can hire anyone you want to. Getting them to work, avoiding conflict of contracts, etc is another story.

Its like being married. You can scr*w whoever you want.....its the repercussions of doing it that might get you hurt.

Still w/this ish?

The only "reported" news on this was that BS Yahoo! article as if that clown has any connections. But it was national pub, so gets repeated, than because the other news outlets repeat the BS it appears to take on a luster of legitimacy. It doesn't.

Jay Larranaga is a name I threw out in the next coach thread as someone I'd like to see. KA repeated the crap out of it. That "reporter" trolled our board and saw it mentioned a bunch and reported it as "sources."

Not going to happen. I'd be thrilled, but not going to happen.
