Welcome Coach Tony Skinn!

GIVING DAY 2023
After watching the post game presser all I can say is Tony is one class act. Our #1 priority is to keep him and support him in every way possible.
Agreed he has been everything I hoped for and more. If the admin isn’t willing to go all-in on supporting one of our own and giving him the best possible opportunity to build a championship program, it’s never gonna happen.

It’s not just the admin. The community and students need to step it up also. The environment in EBA is awful. Tony cares about putting a good product on the floor but it’s hard to attract guys. I was talking to a local recruit about Mason not long ago and he said “Mason isn’t even in my top 10, great staff but that arena and the atmosphere is worse than a high school game”. Kids care about winning and money for sure but they also care a lot about playing in front of a crowd who shows up and makes it fun. I don’t know what the answer is but it’s not what we have been doing.

Well wasn’t the DJ booth supposed to add atmosphere or did that fade into the abyss?

Its definitely helped but if recruits expect 9000 people with shirts off hooting and hollering then they won't come to Mason. Our atmosphere isn't going to be great unless its an important game.

There were many times season when the atmosphere in EBA was highly energized. I was surprised by the fan support at the SLU game—Mason really had little to play for in terms of conference standings. After Mincy was injured, the homecoming crowd willed the team to a win. Gameday is getting better. Steps in the right direction were definitely made this season. Gotta build upon that momentum.

I think it is more so the inconsistency. The players really never know what the atmosphere (or attendance) is going to be like from game to game. I will never forget sitting next to Liz Larranaga in 2011 when we were playing Hofstra and Charles Jenkins. It was an important game in the standings and also one of the best players in the country, and hardly anyone was there/it was pretty quite. She said something to me like "Jim is going to be pissed" and "what do we need to do to get people to show up" I honestly think that had something to do with them leaving for Miami later that year.

Yeah I get that but I think players also know that bigger games are going to have bigger atmospheres.

If that is that much of a worry for them, then Mason (and most midmajors) are not the right fit.

Syracuse is a lateral relative to its competition in the ACC in a lot of ways. If Tony even takes an interview there then I won’t know what to say.

FWIW, I don’t think he’s even in the running there unless their first 3-4 choices all decline.

'Cuse is a "get my bag now and figure the rest out later" move. It's not smart for any potential step-up after it, but I honestly have to respect anyone taking a "never work a day again in my life" contract. But Tony knows better than anyone what a nightmare that gig could turn into.

The opposite is also true. Cuse is searching for its next Jim Boeheim... this could be a "one job for the rest of my life" role as well.

That said, I hope Tony is at Mason for a long time.
