Mason was one of two A-10 teams (along with Dayton) to have a perfect Graduation Success Rate in 2013-14, according to figures from the NCAA.

Kudos to our student-athletes for continuing to represent the university in a first-class manner!

While we'd all like to have more success on the court, I'm glad that our last two coaches have been men who understand that the primary purpose of attending college is to earn a degree.

Any idea where one can find these numbers? The search on the NCAA website doesn't have any data newer than 2007, even if you specifically search by 2013-14.

The freshman class of 2007 is the most recent one available because the NCAA gives student-athletes six years to graduate before assigning a GSR score to each university.

The 2007-08 freshmen were:

Cam Long
Vlad Moldoveanu
Isaiah Tate
Jay Threatt

looking back on it, that was a rather terrible class. Long was a solid player, and Tate was only serviceable as a senior. Vlad and Threatt were duds.

Vlad ended up as a heck of a player at American.

Had he stayed at Mason, he'd have been pretty good.

Only serviceable? Tate was our best defender and had ice in his veins. As a senior he was one of the better 6th men we've had here.

You are also underselling Cam Long too

Vlad never would've become the scorer he became at AU, simply because the Elderly Cuban wasn't flexible enough to let him play out on the perimeter where he belonged.

If Vlad had been at Mason after Hewitt took over, he would've made a deadly face-up 4 -- think Marko but with better size and range on his jumper.

No and no.

Who was our best defender on that team? Pearson? No. Long? No. DJ? No. Hancock? Please. Any of the bench players? I don't think so. You might make a case for Morrison, but he fouled too much.

As for the ice in the veins comment, there were at least 5 times in his senior season when a game looked like it was going to tighten up or slip away and Tate would come off the bench and hit a couple of big 3s and the team would settle right down.

Yes, he ended the season on a shooting slump, but that's because an a-hole vcu player decided to push him from behind while he was in mid-air and hurt his wrist.

I think you might not be remembering that season correctly.

Tate also hit an enormous 3 in the Villanova game. If he doesn't hit that three, we lose that game for sure.

I agree, but let's not forget he also fouled a guy shooting a 3 right before Hancock's heroic 3. Had Luke missed that shot, we'd still be talking about that foul like we do the decision to not foul against Penn State. For Isaiah's sake, I'm happy Luke bailed him out. I also agree about Tate being the best on-ball defender on that team. Wasn't even close.

What I appreciate most about Isaiah was how he realized that it was his defense — not just his shooting — that would earn him playing time. We obviously relied on his 3-point shooting once he got on the court, but he never would have gotten on the court had he not committed himself to being a defensive specialist first.
