Slightly OT: Steven Goff, Dan Steinberg leaving WaPo

Not that he has covered Mason the last few years, but long-time local sports reporter Steven Goff, who mostly covers soccer but has covered Mason men’s basketball before, is taking a buyout and leaving the newspaper. This does not bode well for local sports coverage in the DMV as an already gutted sports section is losing one of its best beat reporters left.

"PUCK’s John Ourand reported Washington Post reporter Steven Goff 'took a buyout' and is leaving the paper after 40 years. Goff wrote on LinkedIn, 'I’m not necessarily done at The Post. I might continue writing (far less frequently) on contract. Or latch on elsewhere as the 2026 World Cup nears. Or launch my own project; (PUCK, 7/21)."

Sorry to see him go, but the environment has changed over the past several years. I do appreciate the coverage we did get and the “What Happened to George Mason Basketball?” article he wrote in January 2015.

Dan Steinberg is leaving too, and is headed to The Athletic as their NFL managing editor, FYI. Dan was the Mason beat writer in our heydays of the 2000s, before Goff was assigned. Good for him, sad for us - I doubt that the Post will ever really cover us again unless we are nationally ranked or in the Sweet 16.

What is going on over at the Washington Post ??? -- There are a lot of experienced writers and staffers leaving. Even outside the sports section.

Shifting......... Post was taken over by former WSJ guy. WAPO sports has been weird for years. Likely in Steinberg and Goff's best interest.

Thought the editor was from some UK outfit…the guardian maybe. WAPO is a shadow of its former self. I dropped it two years ago.
