Wouldn’t the tax implications be massive? They currently operate as Tax Exempt.

Major programs like Alabama, Ohio State, and Texas bring in $150M+ annually, with multimillion-dollar surpluses.

If these surpluses were taxed at corporate rates (say 21% federally), they could owe tens of millions annually.
no taxes if their payroll and other expenses has them at break even. probably have to rent the stadium from the school which would create more expense. might be a brilliant move.

brings back those long ago lectures on efficient transfer pricing,
especially to avoid profit generation at the wrong business level

The next phase - for the 15-25 richest programs

University of Kentucky looks to make athletic department LLC

The school will likely end up licensing the university name to the llc. What happens to the ncaa then?

Maybe it makes sense to let the top 20 go their own way. This is starting to feel like semi pro teams and then everyone else. I don’t really care if we play the ‘big’ teams, we really only do it once or twice a decade anyway so not feeling a loss. For those who miss the hint of a chance of going to the final four if their team makes the tournament well perish the thought. In this age of money there is a snowballs chance of that happening.

I’ve got two wild ideas.

First: Tanking
what if mid-majors intentionally tanked for a year to stack their NIL budget and go all-in the next season with double the firepower?

Second: NIL draft

Each pick would come with a set NIL value, so players know what they’re getting, and schools know what they’re committing to. It’d be like the MLB draft—slot values for each round—and everyone works within their budget.

Smaller programs wouldn’t be forced into bidding wars we can’t win. Instead, we could participate in the later rounds, where the NIL values are more affordable, or maybe even have a separate lower-tier draft.

NOTE- I know both these ideas are not feasible for many reasons. Im obviously just bored in the offseason, trying to think outside the box

Good thoughts on controlling the NIL scene . While we are talking ideas, here is my thoughts. Again Im sure there will be objections, but hey just throwing it out there. One - there is no point in mid major schools competing in the "Big Dance" when you consider all the best athletes are going to power 5 schools. Meaning all the amazing big guys are long gone. The chances of mid majors having any legit chance to crack the top eight is very small if any. So maybe we reserve NCAA tournament for the power five schools and all mid majors will dominate the NIT or whatever you want to call it. This scenario takes into account the NIL payouts for players. Two crowned champions each winning their respective tournaments. More equitable and fair considering. Another thought maybe the winner of the NIT gets an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. That would add some excitement to the events. The conferences will determine whether they are designated mid major or Power 5. Sure there will be objections, but I think this creates more fairness based on who has the money.

I’ve had similar thoughts, it’s like football NCAA and FCS football.

But I’m also hopeful that this past year was a fluke and eventually mid majors will make a deep run again

without a reference to P4 or Mid-major
split the 2 tournaments by NIL budget
and that level may increase per year

for instance
>= $2M goes to NCAA
< $2M goes to NIT

Perhaps not directly on topic, but I guess the "new normal" in CBB means that all the career record holders at Mason have nothing to worry about. Carved in stone now.
nah, waiting on the Alumni Millionaires and Billionaires to come thru for GMU BBall

Just heard that Trump is considering an executive order on bringing order to the NIL world of college sports. Apparently he was prompted by Saban (which is rich unto itself - complaining now that his school no longer has the sole monetary advantage). If nothing else comes of it, I would be grateful to Trump if he can get the NCAA to lock down the transfer portal to two-year commitments.

Two year commitment would make sense but coaches would also have to be willing to take on that risk if a player isn’t working out as planned.

Isn't this always the way--''Apparently he was prompted by Saban (which is rich unto itself - complaining now that his school no longer has the sole monetary advantage). ''

pull up the ladder and close the doors to make sure others can't get what you have or enjoyed.

By the way, just stating that so far the conversation is perfectly fine, but if the conversation goes off the rails, I will be deleting and or locking the thread if needed. Just giving everyone a heads up.

And if you read something posted that doesn't seem to fit or is off the rails. report it or ignore it. Thanks all.
