350+ Division I men' bball teams x 14 scholarship players

All of them get $30k per year?

Then x2 for the Women's team

Villanova, Kansas, Duke, UNC, etc is reasonable/ possible

How much NIL money is currently flowing to teams and players ranked 200 to 350?
Can those programs afford another $420k/year to pay players

Those who can wil eventually form their own league/ conference

No. This is going to create another subdivision within D1.

Exactly
Of the 30 to 50 richest schools that can afford that kind of money
Most likely the cream of the upcoming Power 4 Conferences
Plus maybe schools like Gonzaga and FAU in men's basketball

Will this replace NIL or be in addition to NIL?
There is no replacing NIL. It isn't an actual program of the NCAA. They used to illegally prohibit students from profiting off their Name, Image, and Likeness. The Supreme Court knocked down their prohibition. The NCAA can't replace it.

How is this really any different from what we have now?

Separate tournaments separate National Champions. A lot less money for schools not in the upper most division.

Technically, but, the P5 dominate the entries already and they have seemed to be heading in that direction more and more each year.

I don't see how this is a result of that, except, for maybe the money the autobids get from losing in the first round of the tournament. Interesting point that this could be a ploy by the NCAA to maintain their relevance with the P5 schools. Right now, the P5 seems like they are heading towards breaking away. If this creates D1+ and D1- sub divisions of D1, the P5 (and Big East) could be the rough dividing line and keep them happy.

Possibly Gonzaga but not FAU. They don’t receive a dime from last years FF run.

There might be 8 conferences that could do it on the basketball side as 26 athletes is a lot easier to pay than 111 (85 + 26) (I’m thinking the Mountain West and American might have trouble if they have to commit to paying football and both basketball teams). I’d have no doubt the A10 schools would try to give it a go even if some schools wind up determining it was unsustainable.

What are Mason's players doing to EARN their NIL money these days? I thought they were supposed to do things beyond basketball or make active endorsements to get paid. Does the collective just hand the players wads of cash now?

In trying to understand the NIL In accordance with the transfer rule, by seasons and if the rule is not changed, players can transfer on a yearly basis, with unlimited transfers?

Im not liking the idea of doing all the work to recruit and develop a kid for him to jump after one year on to P5 NIL money. There should be a transfer fee if thats how the courts are going to rule.

Can transfer fees fund NIL???

You’d have to put athletes on multi-year contracts if you want to enforce any kind of transfer fee what in soccer you might call a solidarity payment—which withholds 5% of a transfer fee (in this case an NIL contract?) to pay every team that trained an athlete previous to the transfer.

They also have training compensation, which applies to the first time a player is transferred between clubs.

And yes this would allow lower end programs to be compensated for recruiting and developing the players who ultimately leave.

You can not like it all you want, but, it is the reality of the current situation. As Gemini touch on, all of the contracts (scholarships and all NIL I am aware of) are annual.

The flip side is that I think the A10 may be in a little bit of a sweet spot. We can get P5 people that, either, don't pan out enough or don't get enough playing time and we can also get low majors that blew up. I also think we will get more stud freshman than we normally would have pre transfer rule changes. The P5s may do more people with a track record (transfers) instead of unproven freshmen. Remember, all schools are limited to 13 scholarships, so, in the end, it is a zero sum game in terms of for ever player a P5 steals, they have to give one up.

Agree 100% Adapt or die.

Some College players could possibly in the near future make more than coaches.

Yep - the A10 has always been in this weird spot when it comes to recruiting and NIL is no different. You get guys who maybe couldn't cut it at a Power 5, or guys who wanted to take on a bigger role / wanted a change (DeShawn Schwartz and Darius Maddox are examples of that).

You also get guys who may not be quite Power 5 material but still require a decent NIL but not as much as a P5.

My original point goes back to previous recruiting frustrations specifically and something that I feel that has been improved over the past 3 years. I'm glad Mason has made improvements in recruiting and in hand with NIL to do the best they can to be competitive in the changing landscape.

'The NCAA on Thursday announced significant penalties for the Florida State football team -- including two years' probation and disassociating with its NIL collective for one season -- for violating rules on using name, image and likeness offers as a recruiting inducement.

In addition, an FSU assistant coach, identified as offensive coordinator Alex Atkins by Yahoo Sports, was suspended three games for his involvement. The university also must disassociate with a specific booster for three years.

Those penalties mark the first time the NCAA has severed the relationship between a school and its NIL collective as part of an infractions case. It also is the first time the NCAA has punished a school, coach or collective for using NIL as an inducement.

The NCAA didn't identify Atkins by name, but it said that the assistant coach drove a prospect to a meeting with the head of the program's most prominent NIL collective during the prospect's official visit to campus. At the meeting, the booster offered the prospect $15,000 per month and encouraged him to play for the Seminoles.

The prospect, who was not named by the NCAA but was reported by The Associated Press to be Georgia offensive tackle Amarius Mims, removed his name from the transfer portal shortly after the meeting and remained at his previous school.

Investigators didn't find that head coach Mike Norvell had committed any violations.

Yahoo Sports reported that the booster involved was one of the leaders of Florida State's Rising Spear collective.

NCAA rules prohibit boosters from using the promise of NIL deals as an incentive to try to convince a prospect to attend or transfer to a particular school.

Other penalties that Florida State agreed to include two years' probation, the loss of five scholarships over two years, a $5,000 fine and several recruiting restrictions that include losing seven official visits, a six-week reduction in recruiting communications time and 24 fewer in-person recruiting days during the current academic year.

The penalties are considered Level II violations by the NCAA, which are major infractions but not as serious as Level I violations."

"Florida's football program is under NCAA investigation regarding its recruitment of quarterback prospect Jaden Rashada, sources told ESPN on Friday.

Rashada signed with the Gators in December 2022, but was later released from his national letter of intent after his lucrative name, image and likeness package with an independent collective -- reportedly worth more than $13 million over four years -- fell apart.

Rashada, the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback and No. 31 prospect overall in the 2023 ESPN 300, ended up enrolling at Arizona State, his father's alma mater."

"Rashada had agreed to an NIL deal with the Gator Collective, a fundraising arm not officially affiliated with the university that disburses money to student-athletes in all sports. He asked to be released from his letter of intent after the collective purportedly failed to honor his NIL deal. Florida officials granted Rashada's release on Jan. 20, 2023. The Gator Collective has since been shut down."

"The NCAA enforcement staff is attempting to crack down on NIL packages being used as recruiting inducements."
