Thought this was an interesting visual.

Top chart is Mason's entire performance as a program and bottom is last dozen years w/most recent 4 years per coach - entire tenure in the case of Hewitt & Paulsen.

Green line is wins, red is losses, and head coach at the time is listed underneath.

What we all already knew..Larranaga was a good coach, Dave Paulsen a middle of the road coach and Hewitt a terrible coach.

Not an apples to apples comparison, given our upgrade in conference, but whatever.
Not buying that. It isn't like we are talking about going from the Big South to the ACC. The past few years the A10 hasn't been much better than the CAA with us, vcu, and ODU.

A good coach should be able to win at any level. Larranaga, Barnes, and, maybe, Harrington would have won big in the A10.

The A-10 has been pretty terrible by historical standards over the past couple seasons and still got multiple NCAA bids.

The CAA went 20 years without getting an at-large before our Final Four.

It was a 3- or 4-team league most years. Not at all the same as an A-10 where even a dogshit program like Duquesne is seriously trying to win.

I don't know that they're mutually exclusive that the A10 is considerably better and a great coach can win at every level.

As the league gets better, so does the quality of recruit that's attracted to it. A bottom feeder program in the the SEC like Alabama is still going to have a leg up in recruiting over a winning CAA program like Northeastern.

But the quality of Coaching also goes up. Anthony Grant killed it at vcu and is doing a pretty nice job at Dayton. He was fired at Alabama for not getting it done though.

If you want to compare CAA to A10, here's the current CAA schools that have been to a Final Four:

and here's the A10 schools
  • Mason
  • Davidson
  • That art school in Richmond
  • UMass (even if the NCAA record books say otherwise)
  • Dayton
  • La Salle (& a Nat'l championship)
  • St. Joes
  • St. Bonaventure
  • Duquesne

I know there’s a lot of context to these numbers but still ...... WOW
