News Jonathan Arledge May Not Return

Heard a few rumors tonight that Arledge was trying to force a medical redshirt so he could transfer to an ACC school after this season because he thought he was NBA caliber. (so I went on a search for the story)

Based on the discussion I had tonight with someone very close to Jon, his back has still be bothering him and having spasms but the coaches seemed to think he should have been back on the floor and questioned his drive. Today the rumor of the transfer supposedly got to the coaching staff and he was told he would not be on the team and they will work on the medical redshirt so he could finish his scholarship.

My understanding is that Jon did not want to leave the program but had been weighing his options. He wanted to stay at Mason and work to produce on the court and not transfer. Also sounds like Jon and the coaching staff have not seen eye-to-eye on his on court play.

Looks like he is done at Mason either way. I hate to see him go. I think he has a very high ceiling and the best shot of any of the big men. Really like the kid and his potential.

I have not talked to anyone from the team to confirm any points, just some info I got from someone close to Jon.

Hmmm, is that why he was not on the Bench tonight.

Wow.... I thought Jon's heart was all GMU. He had so much upside to be a force and great breakout star on this team this year. With him, Sherrod, and BA and our depth all around this could of been a special year. Now if Jon is gone it goes back to a possible.... "What If" year.

Tired of this crap. Why can't we recruit kids who have passion and heart for their programs and teams. I'll take a kid who has heart and passion over a good to great drama queen/selfish scorer who thinks it is all about them.

Welp if this really pans out to be true.... time for Marko and Jenkins to pull their Big Boy pants up and go to work.

When Copes comes back he needs to get his head on straight and LEAD this team from a Big Man standpoint. He needs to be a Force in the paint and fire these guys up with his play. The time is now for him to put all of it together and be a force!

None of this happens if the OCM had redshirted Jon as a freshman. Then he'd have 2 years left, and wouldn't even have to think about his future until after the season.

I really think he wants to be at Mason. I don't think he had any intention on leaving but was considering a medical redshirt and coming back to Mason.

This is terrible news. I was hoping he'd come back sooner rather than later and produce at a high level like we all thought he would this season. Hopefully, by some miracle, he stays and plays this season or at the least takes a redshirt and comes back next season.

Seems like this program has to have at least one negative thing happen to it each season for the last few seasons. The "What ifs?" at the end of the season could come back again.

This is one of the weirdest stories I've heard about one of our recruits, and at such an inopportune time too, ugh. I hate rumors.

I tend to be suspicious of a player's friend trying to break a scoop. This could easily be a very slanted or exaggerated view of what is really happening, by some young guy who's excited to share what he knows. Let's not panic just yet.

Sorry to say it but Jonathan is soft. Without him there'll be no more drinking Cocoa without the marshmallow around.

Let's see what happens. You can play a few games before getting redshirted medically. One constant with him has always been us waiting and waiting and waiting for Jon to turn beast. He never has consistently in 3 years. The potential is there physically, but the reality of the sacrifice and heart needed has been missing a lot of the time. Heres to someone kicking him in the a** and givinghim a dose of yyou're about to messs it up for yourself and this team.

Not trying to hammer you Norm, but in your first paragraph you said he was trying to force a med RS and transfer and in a later paragraph you said he didn't want to leave ??

There have been a number of transfer rumors posted that didn't end up happening - Vaughn Gray (what happened to AAUMan?) and Holloway at the end of last season...So hopefully whatever the deal is it gets ironed out.

Only 1 side of the story of course. That said, it did not come from one of his buddies, it came from someone closer to him than that. Of course that further pushes it to be one sided.

What I was saying is that the rumor was he was trying to force a medical redshirt, that was the rumor. The info I have from Jon's folks is that he wasn't trying to do that.

Sorry, but if this story is true, then JA is just not set in reality if he really thinks he is NBA material.

There are people his size and bigger in the NBA that are just animals on the floor.JA doesn't have the tenacity and skillset for the NBA. Just because your 6-9 and have a decent jumper doesn't make you NBA material.

I've seen JA get beaten out for a rebound by a 5'11 guy or shorter too many times. I like the kid, but he is one of the softest kids I've seen ever come into this program.

That being said, he could've developed into a pretty resourceful asset to this team if he performed a bit more consistently. This will be a loss to this team's depth but no one should ever wonder "what if" if he JA leaves. The losses of Luke Hancock and Daren Tarver were legit "what ifs", not Jonathan Arledge.

"Jonathan Arledge May Not Return" by Chris Metsala

Promising Senior power forward Jonathan Arledge may have appeared in his last game as a Patriot, when he logged 25 minutes and 2 points against American in the home opener. If the rumor mill is correct, the quiet but talented big man will seek to graduate from George Mason and transfer to play out his […]

SMH........Was looking forward to seeing what he would have done. Hope its not true, but seems like its coming from a few different places.

Just makes me curious....the staff makes an effort to retain Edwards and Gray and even sticks by Gray through last year....but I guess not the same effort with Arledge?

Plus if Hewitt wasnt already bad in the media, not sure I like that he is airing backhanded crap like "its all about what he can manage" in the press about our players. Last thing I want is some petty Rg3/Shanny media slap sessions.....

Who knows, maybe Jon asked the staff if he could medical redshirt this season and comeback and play next season. Hewitt may have his eye on a few recruits and want to keep that last scholarship. We may never know the real story but I wish him well and am disappointed he isn't playing for us this season.
