I'm going to go back through. I did see some internal fighting, some saying Mason is bad and vcu just played horribly. Then others saying both can be true, Mason is good and they played bad! Either way the metrics may have finally changed. The coaching has titled the other way! Clealry his first year but he hasn't done the job that is the vcu standard or at least what they think it is.

I think Phil Jr will be fine long term but having some growing pains in the a10 is to be expected for any coach. You can recruit your tail off but you still need to outcoach some guys in the league. There is a chance they fall out of the top 4 this year although its early in league play. Even Tony had them in year 1.

I was also looking at the Women's box score (PDF) available at the gomason site and noticed that there weren't any Box Score(PDF)s listed after there Ole Miss game, just regular non +/- box score. Is there a reason for the omissions?

Also, our guards are absolutely getting cooked in one on ones….all of them. Briante Weber ain’t on this roster, as badly as we want it to be the case. We do a very poor job as defending as a team.

Late to respond on this, but here are a few thoughts:

- Mincy played 38 minutes. If this doesn't demonstrate that this vcu team is not like their predecessors I don't know what does. I'm not sure we've ever had a guard play that many minutes against vcu. They don't wear you down like they once did.

- Their team engaged a lot with us during the game. Found it most entertaining when I pointed out to Evans that his jump shot was broken that he just told me over and over that he's rich. Happy he's getting paid but it barely seemed relevant to that strange hitch in his release. This was during game play mind you. Hill and Tracey both also talked, though admittedly Tracey was very polite.

- Great atmosphere. Still a few areas for improvement, but the putt and dunk contest were both fun.

- Most importantly, none of this game felt like an upset. They were absolutely more athletic and that showed at times, but we dictated the pace, got what we wanted offensively and mostly made them take the shots we wanted them to take.

We scored 86 points and a vast majority of the offense was deliberate half court offense.

Nice to score that much and pretty much at will that way. Didn’t see many fast breaks at all.

This is the first year since probably Coach L where the offense isn’t just a handoff at the top of the key until something opens. It’s been wildly refreshing to watch. Makes the product so much more enjoyable even if we’re losing.

Again heard no singing during the singing timeout lol. And the wifi was worse than usual; I don't know cause I sat higher than normal or so many more people on it.
There were lots of little things that I may not have noticed them all. I liked the camera in the tunnel when the team was first coming out. The extra spot lights. The dunk contest was better than rearranging boxes or dribbling between boxes that we normally see. So many box-based contests.

I'm happy to hear of the lack of WiFi. Phone in pocket, there's something going on in the arena that should take up your attention quite nicely.

That stood out to me too. Mincy also has the best handles of any Mason player that I can remember. Even in the havoc days, I think Mincy would have been fine with the pressure. Seeing him get in to his bag a bit as the game went on put me at ease. When is the last time we had a point guard with 0 turnovers against vcu?

The one big knock on PMJ (because I was looking at him as a Mason option if Tony had left for UMD) is that Bryant's defense took a major step back last year while having two above average size guys for the American East (Evans and Mitchell) and a pretty old team. I also believe he will come good, but his defensive scheming was something that always needed to improve.
