Yet JMU a god awful Basketball program is propped up by beating a garbage MSU. Being in Sunbelt which is a complete joke doesnt hurt them! Either beat vcu or should have never joined it's not Rocket science. Losing to vcu every year and not making tournament is not good. Or play in bad conference and be like JMU? Or be like someone like Vermont? I guess you all would rather play cult schools that no one cares about. Football ruined college basketball. Old CAA with odu, uncw, vcu and mason was way better than Current A10.

All I would like is to stop losing to vcu. It just makes no sense what their end goal was. It's been a giant nightmare.
Given your screenname, I have to make one of two assumptions. You were born in 1984 or you graduated from GMU in 1984.

If the former, you were spoiled by Larranaga when you were an undergrad. GMU has made the tournament a total of 6 times since becoming a D1 program 41 years ago. Five of those six appearances happened while Larranaga was coach. Based on a birth year of 1984, you were likely a student during our run to the Final Four. To think that success would last forever is wishful thinking.

Now if the latter, that you graduated in 1984 and you have been a fan since before GMU was even a D1 program, I don't even know what to say. Your time as a fan has had 85% of "unacceptable non-tourney" years and only 15% of, in your eyes, acceptable years. I don't even know why you (personally, you) would still be a fan if you require winning so much.

Either be a fan or don't be - don't predicate fandom of a college team based on winning.

Wishful thinking? Why, why does Mason always have this defeatist clownshow mentality?
vcu is a dump of a school and has won for 20+ years. Why? Why can't Mason then? Why do Mason Fans just give up? It's a complete, Loser Mentality. It's entirely what i'm talking about.

Sorry, some would like to see them actually win! I guess Mason really did just use to be a 2nd rate place and many are stuck in that mentality.

Also you just admitted that even you think Mason can't win. I think you actually just proved my point and what's entirely wrong with this whole situation. I'm not the problem, you actually would agree with notion of staying in CAA then, you just said they won't win! WOW!

Thanks!

Also funny to think that your literal first post on this forum was defending CKE after we lost to a 1-4 Buffalo team in 2022. Let me just quote you, with emphasis added. Remember - YOU said this. These are YOUR words.

"Are people really calling for Kim English to be fired already? Sidney Lowe got 5 years at a school that has 2 national titles, 27 NCAA tournaments and 13 sweet 16s..... Jim Christian got 7 years at a school that has 9 sweet 16s. Capel is in his 5th year with a .424 winning percentage, 14th, 13th, 12th, 11th, place ACC finishes. Pitt has been to 7 sweet 16s and 27 tournaments but he's in year 5. If anyone thinks English is canned after year 2 or 3 they are crazy! 1. Mason doesn't have that kind of money, 2. It was in really really bad shape when he took over, 3. Mason doesn't have that type of history to truly expect Tournament or bust, 4. It takes years to build a program, the expectations to turn the mess around in a year or 2 may have just been overly ambitious. While it's disappointing they aren't very good this year and yes there is a clear problem. It starts with a couple transfers who clearly have zero interest in playing team basketball even if their stats aren't as bad as others. I'm sure this isn't a new problem. They were labeled that way for a long time I'm sure. The current system allows them to continue with their ways. The only way Kim English is ever successful is if he defines an identity and builds a program. Trying to find castoffs that has been booted out of numerous programs rarely works. It's time to start building an actual program and finding kids who fit into his system whatever that may be, not just going out and grabbing kids in the transfer portal because they were highly recruited at one point or another out of high school."

We are 13-3 this year with a team that only returned two players from the previous year - listen to your own advice and simmer down. Read the above, replace CKE with Coach Tony Skinn, put some tea on the kettle, and rethink your anger.

This is the best Mason has looked in years. I'm saying this as an outsider, albeit a local who grew up here. Losing one game to vcu during a new coach's first year doesn't warrant this response.

Also have to give props to the ticket office. I help run a 200-player local elementary school basketball league, and Mason was very proactive in outreach for tickets. I was able to bring some of my team's kids to their first ever college basketball game last night, they could very well become GMU fans. Another parent already said we should do another game.

TONY SKINN is a monster coach. He'll be out the door in 2 years. As everyone on here said, he's long gone!

Mason's own fans don't even think they can win. Fanbase has serious issues and will never get it and or support basketball at level to be an annual contender. He's going to want to win and he's going to leave. Enjoy the 1 or 2 years you get out of him. Team isn't the issue it's the fans.
Let me guess, you are Mason Hoops1984 signed in under another name.

Guys sorry for the nuisance in the thread. I’m working on getting it dealt with as fast as possible and what I can do on my phone. Please keep talking mason hoops and do what we do.

A few of my thoughts:

1. vcu scouted us really well

2. Darius Maddox only scored 4 points, as opposed to the 10+ he usually does

3. Jared Billups was locking up dudes in the 1st half, that was awesome to see in person

4. I saw tons of Mason fans yesterday. I didn't see the usual amount of vcu fans, which is good. There was a lot less of them yesterday

5. Mason had trouble scoring in the half court setting/slower tempo type of game

Not ready to throw in the towel yet, but I am unbelievably disappointed. I was actually surprised that I was really excited about going to the game all day - haven't felt that way in a while. The game however, sucked the life right out of me. Some observations (most have already been mentioned in some manner):

1) Where was everybody? I looked at the Ticketmaster available seat chart and thought we'd fill 3/4 of the house. More like 1/3 full and 20% of them were the Troglodites from Richmond.
2) We played amazing D. Unfortunately, that level of exertion seemed to greatly impact our offense. The legs just weren't there on the shots (someone, can't remember who, hit the friggin side of the backboard from the corner on an open three). Let's face it, we have very good shooters and an 0-15 can't just be them contesting our shots. Tony has to decide if he wants that level of D or offense because it appears he can't have both.
3) Keyshawn - Enough with the spin move. If you get pick-pocketed doing it once, did you really think it was going to be any different the second, third or fourth time? You can get by almost anyone with your face to them, and if you can't - pass it (they are double and tripling you for a reason) Let your teammates beat them.
4) Way too many second chances on high rebounds in the paint. vcu can always jump, box them the heck out of the paint. Kelly did one amazing job of this on one ball - almost boxing his man into their bench.
5) Agree with several comments about us using the man-to-man more. Kelly and Woody can handle their big men with ease. That said, Kelly disappeared in the 2nd half. We need him to take control in a game like this. When our shooters are struggling, we need him to be the man on offense. It seemed to me that he was getting the ball too far from the rim and trying to dribble in which resulted the ball being stolen. Coaches need to read the situation and focus on getting him the ball more down low.

As I said, I am not ready to throw in the towel. Losing to vcu hurts more than anything to Mason die-hards, myself included. I still have had more fun watching this team than any other over the last decade. I want Tony to succeed. I want this thrown-together team to surprise everyone. We had a bad game against our most hated rival - and now I'm over it. And unlike others, I hope we do face them in the tournament cuz I doubt this team lets a mediocre vcu team beat them again. And I want to see that more than anything.

What was Tony Skinn's record against vcu as a player?

3-4

Breakdown by season:

2003: 1-2 (no Mason team has beaten vcu in a Richmond CAA tournament game —I believe this season is the closest we came losing by 1 point after Jai Lewis missed the game winning shot).
2004: 0-2
2005: 2-0 (Final Four season)
