Now if we were playing Eastern Mennonite I don't know that I would like our chances. Needless to say Paul Hewitt and the team have a lot to prove to me. I will be there rooting for the team and am hoping for the best this year, but, my confidence is not high.

I miss GMU's exhibitions against Nantucket Nectars Naturals, Nantucket Nectars All-Stars (whatever the hell they were called), Nantucket Nectars (which is the team I remember).

I don't remember this one--playing against Court Authority . It was during my time at Mason, but I don't have a recollection of CA.

Shenandoah's tallest player is 6'7...One would hope that Mason will push these guys around

It will add a little more pressure to our offense. Maybe it forces us to scratch the 7 sec rule. Attacking the defense early is always a plus imo.

Good point, GS. If this team has any chance to win games this year, it's with an attacking offense and pressure defense. Even though this is an exhibition and they are in a lower division, this should be a good test to see where we are on both fronts.

We need to play the entire game like we played the first half last season against vcu -- meaning, as little halfcourt offense as possible.

If we get pressed, throw the ball over the top, take advantage of numbers and go straight to the basket.

If there's no press, get the ball into the frontcourt and attack.

Either way, we need to try to score before the defense gets completely set. 30-second shot clock should help us in that regard.

With our post players allegedly being our strength, do we trash the 4 out and start a 2 post player offensive attack plan?

Yes, the right thing to do would be to trash the 4 out and start a 2 post player offense. However with Paul Hewitt still as the head coach it's not going to happen. If you watch the open practices, Hewitt is sticking with the 4 out 1 in motion offense. This team will struggle in Puerto Rico.......:sidedead:

We are going to struggle in Puerto Rico regardless of what offense we run, but I do agree with you and GS that we need to run an offense that suits our personnel rather than forcing them to run an offense that doesn't suit their abilities.

Someone play devils advocate and tell me why we WOULD and SHOULD run a 4 out 1 in your butt offense?

Okay I'll play. My only guess is that despite how loaded we are on the frontcourt, none of them have solid post up moves. Shevon and Porter are raw. Marko has a few but not much, still mostly a layup and face-up midrange shooter. Julian Royal same thing. Royal can hit midrange jumpers, reason why Hewitt wanted him so badly back when he was still at Georgia Tech. It is the same reason why he got benched once Gregory took over. Probably the main reason why Ahmad Gilbert committed to Mason, the guy loves to shoot jumpers. Mid range jumpers are the main source of offense when Hewitt's system runs stagnant.

Almost forgot about Erik Copes. He has no solid post up moves. Scores by making free throws and thrashing/crashing into the paint for something to go in the basket.

Our post players are a stark contrast to the Coach L era of the type of bigs we had, they had moves and could score down low, if not kick it out to the guard for a jumper or 3 ball, if they had too much pressure on them. These guys wanted the ball and wanted to score. Seems like our bigs now just want to play defense and tip the ball in under the basket. Soft.

To explain the 4-1.... These "Hewitt" bigs do not have great inside post up moves. Julian Royal supposedly does not have the inside presence of a Jai Lewis type player. Julian makes his money on popping 5-10 foot shots. This 4-1 will allow him to shoot and allow our Guards to penetrate and cut to the rim when necessary. This offense will allow Copes/Thompson etc. the opportunity to take the ball to the rim if there is a mismatch they want to exploit or to get their big in a possible foul situation.

I personally am not a fan of the 4-1 offense and prefer our bigs to have/develop low post moves and bang down low. This offense relies to much on our guards. With our point guard having pretty much a non-existent jumper.... this offense will put a ton of pressure on PH and JJ to deliver points at the 2 and 3. I hope these guys are ready to step up and score 15-20 points on a nightly basis.
