"According to multiple reports, Kentucky is ;zeroing in' on BYU head coach Mark Pope as John Calipari’s replacement. Pope is a 1996 Kentucky alum who played for four NBA teams following his graduation. He has spent the past five seasons at BYU where he has gone 110-52 (.679) including a 23-11 (10-8) mark this past year. Pope also spent four seasons as the head coach at Utah Valley (77-56), and worked as an assistant at Georgia, Wake Forest, and BYU.

The first dominos of John Calipari's move to Arkansas are falling. Is the cycle finally slowing down?

"The first coaching domino of John Calipari's seismic move from Kentucky to Arkansas has fallen.

The Wildcats are expected to hire BYU's Mark Pope as its next head coach, sources told ESPN on Thursday night.

Pope played at Kentucky for two seasons, winning a national championship under Rick Pitino in 1996. He's been a head coach for nine seasons, spending four of them at Utah Valley before coaching at BYU for the past five years. He's taken the Cougars to two NCAA tournaments, and led them to a 23-11 record in their first season in the Big 12 in 2023-24.

Kentucky pursued several high-profile candidates before landing on Pope, as Jay Wright, Dan Hurley and Billy Donovan all distanced themselves from the job very early in the process. The Wildcats had interest in Alabama's Nate Oats, but he announced he was staying in Tuscaloosa before the job even opened.

And earlier Thursday, Baylor's Scott Drew turned down Kentucky to stay in Waco; a second run at Hurley resulted in him staying in Storrs."

"So what's the state of the carousel?

As it stands, 62 jobs have opened -- 58 of which have been filled. As a point of reference, there were 61 job changes total last year, 60 in 2022 and 57 in 2021."

I am an Arkansas fan. My dad is from there. Calipari will make the Razorbacks winners. I am glad for that. BUT, I am holding my nose at the same time.

"According to a Jeff Goodman report, Chicago State head coach Gerald Gillion is on the move and will become the associate head coach at Long Island University.

The job posting for the position lists the salary at $250,000-$260,000 – which is absolutely wild for the NEC. Coincidently, CSU is headed to the NEC next year where they will join LIU.

Gillion has gone 31-64 (.326) in his three seasons at Chicago State. This past season, his squad went 13-19, and won a first round game in the CBI post-season tournament.

"Eastern Washington University named Dan Monson as the 20th head men’s basketball coach in program history.

Eastern brings in Monson who has 445 wins in 841 games spanning 27 seasons as a Division I head coach. Over his career, Monson has led his programs to 13 postseason appearances, including four NCAA Tournament bids (1999, 2005, 2012, 2024) and nine NIT appearances, winning seven games. Over his career, Monson led his programs to nine conference championships and earned five Coach of the Year awards.

Monson is no stranger to Spokane County after coaching Gonzaga in the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons where he played a pivotal role in the start of the program’s current success. Led by Monson, the ‘Zags advanced to the 1999 Elite Eight, winning both the WCC regular season and conference tournament championships that season. Monson went 24-10 in his first season with the Bulldogs, advancing to the second round of the NIT after winning the regular season title. He was named WCC Coach of the Year in ’98."

"Recently, Monson was the head coach at Long Beach State, leaving as the program’s all-time winningest coach (275). In 2024, he led the team to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Big West Tournament as the No. 4 seed. He also led the Dirtbags to the 2011-12 NCAA Tournament, along with four NIT appearances during his tenure. In his 17 seasons at Long Beach, Monson coached four Big West Player of the Year winners and 18 First-Team All-Big West honorees.

Prior to Long Beach, Monson spent eight seasons as the head coach at Minnesota. In the 2004-05 season, the Gophers won 21 games and went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in six seasons. He advanced to the Big Ten tournament five times and made four appearances in the NIT with six wins."

"Vice President and Director of Athletics Tiffani-Dawn Sykes named Patrick Crarey II the 15th head men’s basketball coach at Florida A&M, April 17, 2024.

Crarey comes to the Highest of Seven Hills after leading St. Thomas University to a 61-27 record, two consecutive NAIA Tournaments, and three straight winning seasons in the three seasons leading the Bobcats."

"Chicago State University has named Scott Spinelli to the position of head men’s basketball coach, Vice President /Director of Athletics Dr. Monique V. Carroll announced today.

Spinelli was an assistant coach on the 2023-24 CSU men’s staff as the primary coordinator of game plans for the Cougars, who earned key wins over Northwestern during the regular season and UC San Diego in the College Basketball Insider postseason tournament."
