Best/Worst in DC radio/TV

Someone wants more coverage of Mason hoops, via http://dcrtv.com/bw2013.html:

Best - Jim and Doreen. Sue Palka, Doug Hill, Chick Hernandez, 106.7 The Fan, WTOP, Arch Campbell.
Worst - The demise of local sports coverage, WNEW, The demise of locally based DJ's. (Bert in Atlanta, Elliot moving to NYC, etc.). The lack of coverage for George Mason basketball. Washington Post Paywall

106.7 is generally good (like the junkies, bill rohland and even holden and danny a bit), but Lavar and Dukes are pretty bad imo. The homer is strong with alot of what they say, and Dukes is a basic puppet for Lavar.

Chad was awesome back in the Big O and Dukes and 106.7 was killer, you could listen all day from the Junkies to Don and Mike and then Oscar and Chad but since that went out the window, other than the Junkies its really gone down hill. At least Mike Wise is gone.....hoping some other ones follow him out the door.

It baffles why local networks continue to pay him to be on TV. I can tolerate his column when he isn't pushing his personal agenda — especially his one-man mission to change the Redskins name — but he was awful on radio and is terrible on TV. Channels 4 and 9 actually give him money to be a so-called expert on their sports panel shows, and he comes across like a complete moron with his lame jokes and analysis.

He is pretty bad. His schtick isnt funny, and I can imagine why he gets paid in any fashion to either write or be on TV.

I have always, always, always hated Mike Wise. He stinks of someone who doesn't really root for the teams in this town and is constantly trying to find ways to call us all bad sports fans. His radio show was dull, his column is 90% insufferable, and half of the crap he thinks is funny is just awful. I would rather read Wilbon columns about the University of Maryland all day than read a single word Mike Wise has ever written.

Uh, you do realize that he's a newspaper columnist, right?

His job, for which he is paid a very handsome sum, is to provoke discussion among his newspaper's readers and prompt them to click on his newspaper's website.

I've known many, many columnists who actively root against their hometown teams because unhappy readers are better for business.

Yeah, and Mike Wise does it in a way that is obviously clickbait with little to no respect for actual journalism. He should have stayed away from the Post after they gave him that 3 month suspension.

I think Dukes is the worst part of 106.7. Always enjoy Bill Roland, I actually enjoy listening to Holden and Grant Paulsen more when they are on the MLB channel on XM than when they are on 106.7.

Grant Paulsen is a star in the making. He really knows his stuff and doesn't pull any punches. Brian Mitchell was praising him last weekend for asking Shanihan tough questions after a loss.

I'm shocked that a national station hasn't picked him up full time, but it's only a matter of time. Even when I don't agree with what he says, he almost always makes me see both sides. Here is a great feature on how he was a child prodigy.

To be honest, how hard is it to ask the "tough question"? Personally I believe just about every Mason fan on this board would sit in the front row and pepper Hewitt with questions on why he does what he does and why he is a poor coach......Id assume same goes for Skins fans with Shanny. I wouldnt do it to Harbaugh though, because chances are hed give you the hairy eyeball, question your manhood then walk down from the podium and punch you in the face.

Is that really a badge of courage for reporters?

As Jim can attest, it's much harder than you might think. These reporters are with the team every day and have to have a good working relationship with them. It's your job to push them and hold them accountable, but you also have to toe a line so they are still accessible. If you saw last week's press conference after the Atlanta loss, Shanahan actually walked out after getting a few tough questions about his job.

To use your Mason analogy, it would be much easier for you to confront Hewitt in the Johnson Center and ask him pointed questions about the team than a beat reporter in a press conference. I remember asking Left Driesel a very direct question about a coaching decision when he was at JMU, and he proceeded to lay into me for about five minutes in front of everybody. Trust me, it wasn't enjoyable or a badge of honor. haha

True that.....

Im just saying, in those situations the proof is in the pudding and we all see whats going on in games. Being asked obvious questions, should be the norm. But I understand why they aren't lol.

While were talking about horrid journalists, lets all take a minute to LOL at Jason Reed who emphatically wrote and proclaimed on 106.7 how the skins were a 12-4 team who would easily repeat the NFC East crown and make a deep playoff run.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. He's the most hypocritical journalist out there. He went from projecting us to being one of the best teams ever to being a mouthpiece for RG3. A month ago he was saying Snyder should extend Shanahan's contract, and now he changes his tune again to saying he should be fired for the sake of RG3's careers. He has no credibility at all.

I like Boswell's baseball coverage...his other stuff is just kinda stating the obvious.

Agreed. Bowell is a bit of homer for the Nats but he is also one of the best baseball writers in the entire country.
