Game 1: GMU (0-0) vs UMBC (0-0) on Monday, November 2, at 4:00 PM.

I look at the overall quality of guard play as a step down from last year. I don't think either Baraka or BOC have to displayed the ability to situationally change speeds like Mincy and Long. That feature for both guards gave vcu and SLU fits last year.

My concern is that if this team can only play fast and not change speeds. We will see more unforced turnovers against teams in close games.

Yes Baraka got his 20 and 5.. but Stetson still went 12-21 last year.
Disagree significantly

Well, I don't have any info. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!

A man of many words. "Dynamite drop-in Monty! That broadcast school has really paid off."

However, I am in full agreement with your disagreement. One game in isn't a large enough sample size and I remain stoked about this, deep, lineup.

No agreement or disagreement, just commenting because i'm confused how it looks like you quoted me saying the above when it was jruby...

Umm, no. From what I see, NewPatriot said it. You are 99 Patriot, and I don't see a post from jruby stating the above.

So confused here

My guess is it’s because New Patriot quoted 99 Patriot in their post and when biasedannouncer quoted New Patriot, the quote from 99 Patriot was made visible as the one being quoted maybe because of an edit? I’ve had that happen to me before.

Anyway, also disagree that our overall guard play is worse than last year. The one exception being that Long could take over a game when he was on and we haven’t seen that yet. I suspect both EOE and Okojie are going to have those nights though.

All 4 of our top guards are better defenders than last year though.

People forget how trash Mincy, Riley and on occasion Jahari could be on the defensive end last year even with their high offensive ceilings.

Riley only got 13 and 8 minutes against American and Green Bay for a reason...

Mercer went 19–13 last year, so I think that's a pretty bold claim after just one game, although it's certainly possible. Yes, Baraka put up 20 and 5 at Mercer, and yes individual production and team success aren't necessarily the same thing.

If we're going to use past success as a measuring stick, BOC has played in a conference championship game in all three years of college. Obviously, two of those came in a different conference, but you introduced that comparison.

I also disagree with the idea that the overall quality of guard play is a step down from last year. Mincy and Long were excellent at changing speeds and controlling tempo, which gave teams like vcu and SLU fits last season. But I don't think we've seen enough to determine whether Baraka and BOC can do the same with THIS GROUP.

The concern that this team might only be able to play fast, leading to more unforced turnovers in close games against better competition, is fair. But we're only one game into the season. It's far too early to conclude that these guards can't control the pace or adjust to different situations.

We're also forgetting that Baraka, as a freshman, scored 19 second-half points to lead Mason past No. 16 Dayton in the program's first-ever home win over a ranked opponent. He has already demonstrated that he can take over a game against elite A-10 competition. I'm not sure where the idea that he can't control a game is coming from.

It was pretty clear that everyone was keyed up for the first real game. You could see that at the beginning with how frantic they were on the boards at the beginning. Give them a game or two to calm down before we say anything.

Now I'm confused. Who the heck's on first anyhow?

He just looked tired at times. Nothing major so why I said may still be working back from injury to get in game shape etc. He wasn't bad but his shooting wasn't good and that can often be a direct results of tired legs etc. I'm not worried about it. I do think he still has another level he can get to.
I’d love to see another level! That be a dangerous player!
