I agree
I believe all students have their IDs scanned to get into the game
Everyone who scans in before tipoff is entered into a $100 cash raffle
winner announced at the last 4 minute time out and must be present
The problem is that student attendance was pretty good yesterday. Those students just sit on their hands the whole game. No school pride on display. All of these artificial engagement ideas kind of detract from the basketball, are awkward, or have a perverse effect on cheering during the actual game.
Find a group of rabid students that commit to standing and cheering the entire game and put them in the front of the student section. Have someone there to kick them out of the front row if they sit down. Eventually coordinate them with the Green Machine or DJ. I kinda thought that was the point of putting the DJ in the student section, but I didn’t notice him turn to the section or pump up the crowd a single time last night.
If the students won’t do it, then find those beer guzzling degenerate alumni and have them set the example.
And for god’s sake, stop putting random other sports teams in the front that don’t engage with or care about the basketball game.
I didn’t notice a single tradition being held to by the student section last night. No paper confetti. No turning around during the other team’s introduction. Did we sing the fight song or living on a prayer? I’m fine if some of those traditions die, but replace them with something. (Seems like the Green Machine tried to keep Seven Nation Army going until the first bucket last night but ultimately had to give up.) Also, can the Green Machine be packed down lower to the court? Doesn’t seem like they need the height of that entire section.
