22-23 Starting 5

Josh is not quite fleet of foot to play the 4... if you think he fouls enough playing the 5 imagine him trying to guard an athletic kid who is actually quick...

Dinkins
Cooper
Fernandez
Ticket
Oduro

6th man: Big John, Bailey, Singleton and Blake takes a step this year
I agree. The freshmen may not both start day 1, but when the A-10 schedule begins, this is the starting five.

Unless he gets hurt again, and doesn't perform well, I can't see how Ronnie isn't starting PG for next year. Could that happen? Certainly, but I have to think its his to lose.

It looks like the roster is going to have 10 capable players, and we'll have to see who makes the rotation that will probably be 8-9 deep. At this point Peter Oduro and Malik Henry are most likely not going to sniff the floor. If he doesn't improve, Blake very easily could be in that group as well (although I think he will improve).

There is depth, there is talent, there is size. Now its time for them to put it all together on the floor.

He has never performed well so I’m still unsure why year 3 we are banking on that happening.

Lol I know you have a very high bar for performance but regardless of our opinions of what Ronald has done (and he hasn’t done much), based on what we have and from comments the staff has made, Ronald will get every opportunity once again to be starting PG. Maybe he messes up. Maybe he gets hurt.

Either way, I have to think he’s got the position as of right now.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens with Ronald. Number 1 is will he stay healthy? His numbers improved in all areas last year but remain weak on all counts. FG% went from 29.3 as a frosh to 36.0. 3 point % went from 13.6 to 21.9. Rebounds went from .9 to 1.1. FT% from 56.3 to 80%. Assists went from 1.1 to 1.4. For his career he has 40 turnovers and 40 assists. Not exactly All-star numbers. Like many here I was hoping to land a proven point guard. Will Dinkins be the real deal? Time will tell.

Why is Fernandez listed as a sophomore did he get a red shirt for coming in halfway through the year how does all that work?

Pretty sure I've asked this before about other players and the answer is that they list academic year on the website, not athletic eligibility year, just to confuse the bejesus out of us. Fernandez prepped for a semester and was enrolled for a semester, so it would make sense he's an academic sophomore.

He’d need 30 credits to be a sophomore though. Is he taking 15 over the summer? That’s a crap ton.

Either it’s what he “will be” or he took 15 credits of AP to get to the 30.

No idea but seems weird. As long as he has 4 years of eligibility we are good.

I think that’s it. Unless CKE wants to go bigger in the front court, in which case it becomes

Singleton
Cooper or Bailey
Ticket
Oduro
Ojiako
I don't doubt that Oduro can perform as a PF offensively, my question is whether he can consistently defend out on the perimeter/in space.

Against whom? Maybe not a quicker guard, but against other forwards, I think he has the lateral foot speed to more than hold his own against big men. I'd also assume in a "Big lineup" with a more traditional 1-5 positions, that we'd either see this being done to counter the opponent's size and/or a lack of 3-pt shooting and would run more zone defense.

Agreed. The reality is Josh is a power forward … if the plan was to use him exclusively at the 5, why have him cut weight and spend so much time working on his perimeter skills? If the opponent plays small he can slide to the 5, but we need a legit center to defend teams that use 2 bigs as part of their standard lineup.

It's an interesting question because some of the conference still rolls out two-big lineups and some of the conference doesn't. Richmond, Davidson, Rhody (RIP), and Dayton all ran majority two-big last season. If Ojiako can play, we have flexibility to slide Josh to the 4 in a big lineup or keep Ticket at the 4 and Josh at the 5 in a small lineup. I think the latter is still our base lineup, but Ticket won't have to be a bug on the windshield against some of the bigger teams we'll see. He will also have a significant size and length advantage if he's playing more 3 and less 4. Gotta see how it plays out but theoretically some flexibility is there.

Where I'm struggling is that the best players on this team are all wings and forwards, which makes it difficult to project minutes and lineups since we need to see who emerges from the big mess at the guard spots.

Edit: also want to mention that you can't really have a starting 5 without JF. We didn't win him by telling him he'd come off the bench as a freshman.

now show him playing defense on the perimeter without fouling... come on Koolaid Jim. He can't defend 5's without fouling when they get by him... what do you think 4's will do?
Improved quickness and agility has been known to translate to defense from time to time lol
