Where Are They Now?

Bill Courtney's Cornell Big Red (0-9) hosts St. Francis (PA) (1-7) on Saturday. A win over St. Francis would avoid the Big Red's first 0-10 start to a season since 1904-05. A win would snap a 15-game losing streak dating back to last season, the second longest in school history.

Courtney is in his 4th season at Cornell (35-61, 36.5%; 18-24 Ivy, 42.9%).

Scott Cherry and Ahmad Dorsett were just in town Thursday night as High Point lost to Georgetown. They have a good chance to win the Big South this year and go dancing.

Not to take this off topic, but this is an appropriate thread title for our team... every game...

Not only has our program started to disappear, but a lot of posters have too.

Haha, that's funny. I've had at least three long-time posters tell me you are part of the reason they don't post anymore. Being critical is obviously a big part of posting on a message board, because we all come here to vent; but I do understand why some people don't want to hear the same sky-is-falling speeches by the same four or five posters in every thread — especially after a win.

Huge disclaimer: By no means am I trying to squelch free speech or deter criticism. I'm just telling you why many people no longer post here, and it has little to do with our program allegedly disappearing. In fact, the boards were never more active than 2007 when were a .500 team under Coach L.

The boards were active in 2007? Really? The season after the Final Four? Nah that can't be true.

Tom,
I'm going down with the ship. Those who bail on our beloved message board have that right. But they are simply running from the truth.

Fans aren't interested in this program as much anymore because this is probably going to be the third straight season that they don't come anywhere close to making the NCAA tournament.

Given the substantial support for the idea of hiring Courtney when Coach L left (by all reports, Courtney was a terrific person and recruited most of our Final Four team), his record at Cornell is a sobering reminder of how problematic it may be in hiring an up-and-coming assistant coach.

Tom,

I feel the same way, man. I'll be here until the bitter end, like one of the musicians on the Titanic. I do get, though, why many people don't come to our boards anymore. There's enough stress in the world without all the doom-and-gloom going on here.

That said, I do completely understand why you, lawdog, Hugh (aka Quentin) and KA get more frustrated, because you have to watch this from afar and don't get the experience of attending the games. and socializing with fellow fans at the Patriot Club. Trust me, it's very therapeutic when we aren't playing well to have a beer with fellow fans before games and at halftime.

Message boards and the members on them are always fluctuating. A segment of users like to just ghost and not post. So long as you don't have a troll that doesn't anger/annoy the entire user base, then it's all normal rise/fall stuff. I use to run very popular boards that required lots of troll intervention, and we're far from that.
If someone leaves a board, in most cases it's typically a changing of interests or they're seeking something new.

The social aspect is what really roped me in.

I don't think fans roll like that. If they like the product they stay interested. Ticket sales increased bc we went to a better conf. Next year they could drop depending on performance. Or they could stay the same as fans start to value the better competition from conf games.

At least Cornell has a good hockey team to take their minds off the basketball team's woes. Outside of the couple of good years prior to Courtney, I'm not even sure how many people are aware Cornell has a basketball team.

No, I am not endorsing the idea of GMU starting a hockey program.

Eh, true to a point. But look what Cornell lost the year Coach Courtney took over and check out all the injuries the guy has had at very inopportune times. I'd take Coach Courtney back if our job ever became open.

Where are you seeing that ticket sales increased? I've been to every home game and haven't seen it.

I love Bill Courtney and lobbied for him to get our job, but aren't you the one who said losing Arledge shouldn't affect us? We haven't had every player available for one game this year, but I don't see people factoring that in when we are 5-3 compared to 0-9.

Like Pablos said, sometimes hot assistants don't equate to good head coaches. It pains me to say this as a fan of Courtney's, but Scott Cherry might be the best former Mason assistant out there given the job he's done at High Point.

I would certainly prefer Cherry over Courtney, but neither has really proven themselves enough at their respective schools to warrant consideration as Mason's head coach.

Actually, it was Psyclone who just said it. And, surely you aren't totally surprised by Scott Cherry's success as a head coach?
