Did anyone else hear the announcers in last nights game about how CTS contacted over 80 p5 teams and the only one who would even entertain playing us was Virginia Tech? Seems as if coach has been desperately trying to schedule better teams but to no avail.

I thought I heard 50 but I'm over 50 and seem to need people to repeat themselves at a slightly concerning rate.

According to Skinn, Tech was also a no until another game fell through. We almost had no P5 games at all.

Wow, That’s crazy.

How can the selection committee punish mid majors for weak schedules when the P5 teams refuse to play us?

It seems like a cartel. A group of mid majors should pool some money and get a high price lawyer.

Scheduling exclusion + biased selection metrics could eventually be challenged.

The problem is you'll need some sort of smoking gun to prove that it's collusion as opposed to P5 teams just all all giving each other the knowing glance. Every individual team has the right to set it's own schedule so you can't really sue anyone.

Why do you think the P4’s are increasing the number of conference games in basketball and football? To decrease the number of OOC games and opportunities for non P4’s to build resumes.

Correct but again, you gotta prove it. And you'd probably have to prove that there was cross-conference agreement to do so. I'm no lawyer (I only play one on MasonHoops.com) but I would imagine there's nothing illegal about the ACC, SEC, etc saying "we think for the good of our own conference we'd like to play each other more". Where they would run into problems if there was a pact between conferences to do so, but my guess is that they're all mostly doing it of their own initiative just trying to keep pace with each other.

Now, outside of the legal system, I think this might hurt them long-term if they aren't careful. The tournament has always been loved precisely because it affords tiny schools the chance to go giant killing. If it gets to the point where it's just a giant P4 self-suck with a few random schools thrown into the play-in nights then I think there's the potential for a falloff in interest. Now, will the powers that be realize it until it's too late? Of course not. The individual incentive for the AD's who make up the NCAA committees are way too high in the short-term for them to take a long term view. And like everything else in this country, we will be left with a cheap facsimile of once great institution, ravaged by greed and self-interest. Fret not though, as the coming late-stage of American culture will be brought to you by Draft Kings™

When you have an increase of teams in a conference, there will be pressure to increase the number of games between them.

But why does the other A10 teams get some more chances that Mason? Not a recognizable name for basic fans? Afraid of Tony?
All the same dead horse reasons, but I still think there’s something underlying that we don’t do (like offer enough money or incentives), that holds us back. I just haven’t heard or been able to prove anything.

The first step is improving with a better MTE, somehow.

I mean, outside of a few A10 schools there isn’t a lot of P5 playing going on. SLU played one (in an MTE), Fordham played 0, Duquesne played 1, URI gets Providence every year but played no one else, Bonaventure got UNC (in and MTE) and no one else, you can look down the list.

The solution is scheduling better mid-majors. The Utah States, the New Mexicos—FAU turned out to be a decent game for us (better if we had beaten them on the home court, but I’ll take the neutral at least).

Santa Clara turned out to be SLU’s best win (better than had they held out against Stanford). Grand Canyon is also equal to Stanford.

The solution is for mid-majors to be more strategic and be willing to schedule more home-and-homes with each other. Demand better representation in the MTEs (for those mid-major brands who can demand it—can’t let the P4s bully us out of these tournaments).

Seth Berger, the Organizer and Founder of the Vegas Players Era Tournament, said NCAA D1 Basketball will end up being two divisions: Power Conference and Mid Major; each having their own post season tournament. The mid majors ultimately being a farm system for the power conferences.

Agree
Is it worth paying Loyola-Maryland to come to EagleBank?
(same holds for Towson, UMBC, Coppin, Morgan)

or is it better to save that buy game money and use it to entice a P4 team to come here

Instead schedule a weekend game at Loyola-Marymount - in Baltimore - and offer a ticket and bus ride to the fan base for $25-$35

As a KenPom 300+ team, GMU should be able to beat them wherever they play

for the 1,000,000 time, there is no way we are getting a P4 at EBA. The incentive money that I mentioned is more for a neutral / MTE / buy game but I have no idea.
