All the same dead horse reasons, but I still think there’s something underlying that we don’t do (like offer enough money or incentives), that holds us back. I just haven’t heard or been able to prove anything.
The first step is improving with a better MTE, somehow.
I mean, outside of a few A10 schools there isn’t a lot of P5 playing going on. SLU played one (in an MTE), Fordham played 0, Duquesne played 1, URI gets Providence every year but played no one else, Bonaventure got UNC (in and MTE) and no one else, you can look down the list.
The solution is scheduling better mid-majors. The Utah States, the New Mexicos—FAU turned out to be a decent game for us (better if we had beaten them on the home court, but I’ll take the neutral at least).
Santa Clara turned out to be SLU’s best win (better than had they held out against Stanford). Grand Canyon is also equal to Stanford.
The solution is for mid-majors to be more strategic and be willing to schedule more home-and-homes with each other. Demand better representation in the MTEs (for those mid-major brands who can demand it—can’t let the P4s bully us out of these tournaments).
