These are games we could get on our own. A buy game with a low major and two home-and-homes with decent mid-majors. The point of these MTEs should be to get a shot on a neutral court to play teams we normally would have a hard time scheduling.

Not really sure the extra game is even worth it if these are the games we are going to get. Is this MTE even televised? Is our travel even being covered?
I don't know about the financial considerations of these tournaments. I hope that arising from the broadcast rights and sponsorships that Mason walks away with $25k-$100k - after expenses.
I saw this today and hope the GMU BBall leadership would consider a "tournament" like this.
A triangle home and away - but with the right teams in a "close" location a lot of fans could attend the away game.

Something like JMU or ODU, Delaware, Temple, Princeton, American

Neither Tournament does anything for the team's OOC SOS or Net rating. vcu is the gold standard of the A10 and is participating in the Battle for Atlantis with return games of H and H with New Mexico, and Nevada and the road game with NC State...any amount of success against the above competition will leave them with a top 50 NET rating in the OOC to.begin conference play.

Mason somehow picked up Marquette and Duke on the road last year. Prior years @Tennessee, @Auburn, @Kansas etc.

There's no reason Mason should pick up at least 1 marque game coming off it's best season since 2011.

The only this schedule will do is leave Mason with 120+ Net rating to begin conference play..leaving it in horrible position to make any post season tournament bid.

NO QUAD 1 opportunities in the OOC.

Very disappointing.

Agreed - I would rather add more P5 buy games. Would love to get a nuts and bolts explanation about our scheduling. We all know we can't get P5's to come play us - even with a former Coach/legend coaching at one of them or very close connections of our current coach at others.

But, none of us seem to have an explanation for why we don't do more home and homes with similarly situated mids or exactly how difficult it is to schedule P5 buy games - we typically have 1 or 2 - could we easily get more if we were willing? Is there a financial advantage to hosting so many sub-200 buy games from ticket/concession revenue?

On it's face I would 1 million percent be behind having 4 away P5 buy games and 2 or 3 less home games against MEAC teams.

Can we at least see what the rest of the schedule is before freaking out like we are playing a 360 SOS schedule like our buddy Chris Caputo does at GW?

I dont' think our MTE is good at all, but to already proclaim that we're not going to do anything before we see it put together or even hit the court is silly.

Now that we have to pay kids every year I'm assuming the Mason scheduling team has to look at the expenditure to revenue generated to make it make sense to play these P5 teams on the road versus bringing in a less than ideal quality opponents at home.

Landing these P5 teams seems like rocket science to our scheduling team apparently and I would like to know more of the reasons behind this - is it us? Do we shy away from these types of agreements or ask for too much? Maybe the financials don't make sense? Maybe teams don't want to play us or agree to a return game? Why exactly can't we land these types of games!? Now that we have had some success in the A10...do other schools perceive us more of a threat for an upset at their place and not just a cupcake team?

Of course we would love to see P5 teams more than once at home but just how hard is it exactly, especially in the landscape of where college bball is now.

Take this article for what it's worth but seems we made $1.2million profit from basketball - either last year or years ago.

This article gives a pretty good breakdown of what does into our Sporting Revenues over the years but only goes to 2022 - assuming this is for all sports.

Their latest breakdowns (2022) - we brought in over $35 million, with $30million in expenses - so we made close to $5million in revenues. Now do we bank most of that money or put it into investment funds... do they move some of it around to other needs/areas? Would expect some is being directed to the $2.2 million facility upgrades.

Your second paragraph hits the nail on the head. I always thought it was "you have to provide value and be no risk", but when I see teams who haven't been relevant or equivalent to Mason getting decent match-ups year after year, I'm just stumped. Yes the vcu and the Dayton's of the world provide value and are little risk, I get it. However, I question how and why URI/UMASS/Joes all seem to get their share of games that are decent and we are on the same plane as them. I'd love to know what the answer is.

Why can’t we use the 5 million to get a top 4 nba draft pick and outbid a team like Arkansas for a program changing player?

I'm not sure of how the numbers in each of the expense and revenue columns are EXACTLY the same in 2021 as they are in 2022. It's beyond reasonable belief that the amount of ticket sales in one year would match exactly what they were the following year. And did ticket sales really go up 12-fold from 2020 to 2021?

I’m skeptical of those 2022 numbers too. Maybe schools stopped reporting to USA Today or they stopped calculating the budgets.

I found this site which has Mason’s expenses at 36.87 million for 2024. They don’t track revenue though, so I can’t tell you if they made money or not.

I can tell you the university as a whole netted 65 million in 2023 according to their own fiscal statements.

Look at this!
American lost every significant player except for 2 from their NCAA team and managed to pull @Wake @Rutgers @GW @vcu and @UVA!

That's 3 Power conference, the gold standard of the A10 and an A10 Preseason favorite.

American can get those road games because they’ll almost certainly lose all of them. Are we supposed to want that for Mason for some reason I’m unaware of?

So you want to schedule more games we’re likely to lose? Even middling P4 teams win at least 75% of their OOC home games. Interesting strategy to build an at-large profile by repeatedly punching yourself in the face lol.

Where Mason’s schedule has been suffering for the past several years is not being able to get neutral court opportunities against P4s in MTEs. That’s where teams on our level have a real chance to take some quality scalps, but we can’t even get in the door coming off a 27-win season.

Shouldn't there be at least 9 more OOC games announced? It is annoying that GMU can't seem to get a P4 on a neutral floor. I want to see the rest of the OOC schedule before I decide whether life is worth living.

This MTE is complete a** and anyone saying otherwise is lying to themselves or doesn’t understand what they are looking at.

The window to salvage this OOC into something that’s not 250+ SOS is rapidly closing.
No one really is saying otherwise, just asking to wait and see how the rest of the schedule shakes out.
