Jalen has had a very productive career at Mason. Imagine how much further along he would be had he spent all 5 years with Paulsen instead of getting jerked around by Blewitt.

Jalen is kind of an archetype of a great college player whose game just doesn't translate to the next level. 6'7" post up specialists don't exist in today's NBA. His best bet to make a roster would be as a 3 and D guy, but he's spent his entire college career not taking threes and defending post players instead of swing players, so unless he's got some skills in the bag we've never seen before, it's not happening for him. Klay Thompson, Demar Derozan, Nick Young, Kyle Korver, etc. are all 6'7". The things expected at that height are much different in the NBA.

You could maybe look at Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and talk yourself into Jalen having a chance, but MKG is an out-of-this-world athlete who's already a stellar NBA level defender. Guys who are 6'7" and can play the 4 in the NBA are exceptions that prove the rule. I can't even think of another guy that size that's not at least a threat to step back and hit a 3.

Oh how I wish Jalen had another year with Paulsen. His development this year has been amazing - he's got nearly total command of his position and his role within the offense. He did a great job battling with Holloway last night (speaking of guys who need new coaching, Holloway can actually kind of play, which surprised me) and he's very comfortable playing the high post on one possession and the low post on the next. That's not always easy. His passing out of both post positions really opens up the offense, and he's become clinical at passing out of double-teams and finding shooters and cutters. Here's his assist rate in his four seasons:

Freshman: 12.0%
Sophomore: 12.7%
Junior: 5.6% (we were an awful shooting team, which partially explains this)
Senior: 17.1%

His PER follows a similar pattern and is peaking at 22.7 this year. I'll always feel robbed that he had two years of Hewitt, but at least Paulsen came along in time to salvage his senior season.

But Hewitt was preparing him for the NBA and turning him into a 3... so Paulsen robbed him of a future NBA career

Jalen is currently 33d nationally in effective fg% according to Kenpom (Div 1 games only).

Jalen had his 8th career double-double (15 points & 12 rebounds) plus 3 assists, 1 turnover, & 1 blocked shot in the 76-74 victory over UMass today. He has 928 career points (passing Ahmad Dorsett for 40th place in career scoring at Mason), 626 rebounds, & 89 blocked shots. Jalen needs 72 more points to become the 35th Mason men's basketball player with 1,000 career points.

With a team-high 23 points (9-13 FG's & 5-6 FT's ) in 25 minutes, Jalen has 978 career points. He passed John Wiley (970) for 37th place at Mason and needs just 22 more points to become the 35th Mason men's basketball player with 1,000 points.

Jalen had 12 points and a game-high and career-high 13 rebounds (and 1 assist, 1 turnover, & 1 steal) in 27 minutes in the 73-67 Homecoming victory over Fordham.

He has 990 career points, passing Jon Larranaga (980) for 36th place in scoring at Mason. He needs just 10 more points to become the 35th Mason men's basketball player with 1,000 points.

Jalen has 654 career rebounds and trails Mike Morrison (658) by just 4 rebounds for 14th place at Mason.

In the 93-70 victory over Richmond tonight, Jalen had 17 points (6-8 FG's & 5-6 FT's), 8 rebounds, 3 assists, & 3 turnovers in 27 minutes.

(1) He has 1,007 career points, passing Levester Berry (994), Keith Michael (1,004), & Brian Miller (1,006) for 33rd place in career scoring at Mason; and

(2) 662 career rebounds, passing Mike Morrison (658) for 14th place in career rebounding at Mason.
