GIVING DAY 2023
There will come a day, and it’s not far off, when Mason’s ability to invest in our NIL pool/coaching salaries will be outpaced by Tony’s rising stock and we will lose him.

The man is a damn fine coach, and unfortunately we are what we are as a program as a whole. Money will help, but a big boy is gonna come calling soon.
You are, sadly, right...most probably. Although you never know.
Still, if Tony leaves for bigger and better things and he becomes one of those big time coaches you see on TV all the time, he leads his team/s to Elite 8s, FFs, and Nattys, and retires and becomes a national broadcaster, I will be very happy for him. (Although at our respective ages, I may not be around for that last one.)
But I must say, I am hoping for at least 5 years from him.

Probably so. I just wish, sometimes, that in America we valued being content, valued belonging, valued building something more than endlessly chasing the next salary bump. Tony is already a millionaire coaching where he grew up, at the place that essentially changed the trajectory of his life. He was at a JUCO with all the talent in the world, and Coach L literally told him, “Don’t waste a year of eligibility—I’ll take you at Mason without even seeing you play.”

Fast-forward to now: he gets to be the face of the university that believed in him, he’s coaching in front of people who love him, he’s said publicly he’s the happiest coach in America, and GMU is investing in him and the program more than ever before.

Skinn doesn’t owe Mason anything—but he also doesn’t have to give up a situation where he’s rich, respected, supported, and genuinely happy. I get that a bigger school will eventually come calling, but there’s something to be said for staying exactly where you’re valued and building your own legacy instead of becoming the next guy in someone else’s machine.
YES a hundred times over!
And maybe Tony is just. that. guy.

GIVING DAY 2023
I am still trying to get tickets from the GMU ticket office. They continue to give the ol' runaround. Gave them a call this morning and it's still "we expect to have an update soon."
I keep being told they will call me. I have been hearing that for 3+ weeks. I wish that they understood that this impacts travel plans, sign-ups for the alumni event, etc., and may impact whether folks are able to make the trip at all.

My daughter goes to Tech, so I reserved a hotel in downtown Blacksburg as soon as I heard we were playing down there. I, unfortunately, canceled the hotel yesterday after not hearing anything from Mason about being able to buy tickets.

Tom, was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Likewise, they were cheap. Under $20 for tix around midcourt, though I'm guessing they've gotta bit of altitude.

Was subsequently a bit surprised when I priced midcourt tickets for the game at La Salle and discovered they are $45.

Believe it or not, I saw this line posted somewhere and the response was something like, "Hey, you idiot, the Germans did not bomb Pearl Harbor! It was the Japanese!"
That response was wrong. Bluto knows what he was talking about.

The issue with tickets is not on our athletic department, they are waiting to hear from Tech what our allotment is. I think its crazy this isn’t a set thing that is specified in every contract to avoid this issue, but every away P4 game Ive traveled to it has been the same case and I’ve just bought tickets from a 3rd party.

The ticket office does finally have the ticket allotment from Tech, so if you gave them your name when they collected the interest list, you should be covered, just try to be patient.

After he was fired by the Wizards he became the color commentator for JMU basketball. Is he not doing that anymore?
I always liked Buchantz on Channel Five. He was there when Channel Nine had Glen Brenner, Channel Four had George Michael and Channel Seven had Frank Herzog.....the "Golden Age of Local Sports Anchors" in D.C.. Buchantz year he had all four competing anchors on for a get-together for a meeting of the local sports anchors on his Monday Night Redskins Show timeslot at the end of the football season. I ALSO I remember Brenner and Michael (who knew each other because had worked together or were competitors in earlier in Philly) making jokes at each others expense while filming a "promo" for the "Baseball in D.C." movement about 1990. Brenner had his "stroke" during the Marine Corps Marathon in Oct. 1991. That stroke was caused by a Brain Tumor that took Brenner's life only a few days after the Redskin's first playoff win against Atlanta in Jan. 1992. They are all gone now. Brenner and Michael dead, Herzog retired to Florida (I heard him about a year ago on a podcast.) and Buchantz now off the Wizard's broadcasts. He must be "around" seventy years old now. .....Geez' I'm old.

I remember Brenner coming out and giving a speech in the Student Union and wearing a stupid Mason hat during his broadcast that night. He was hilarious, and it was a sad day when he passed way too young.

What's a "stupid Mason hat"?
Probably the one with ear flaps (the kind worn in the "Fargo" movie!). That was a giveaway at some point in the past--maybe the one where we lost to Duquesne in a game held in the RAC gym due to the beginning of a big snowstorm-the Duquesne bus got stuck on the Pa Turnpike for many hours returning to Pittsburgh after the game

Oh yeah .. that was a stupid hat.
My bro liked it, though. :giggle:
...just sayin'.

Nah. It was one of those old "pimp" hats that the Jackson Five used to wear, with alternating Green and Gold panels. Someone gave it to him as a goof and he put it on during the speech.
