Fan Reset Button

If you can find one, I suggest you push it. I have.

What I mean is I have been wallowed in discontent like everyone else this season and was actually planning on not even watching the vcu game tonight (but working out instead because I got super fat over the holidays). Then I read the vcu boards and how they talked about how our team sucks, our school sucks, our fans suck, our mothers suck, etc.

Reading their posts got me fired up as an alum and as a fan. It rekindled a fire that Hewitt has been slowly snuffing out. It reminded me that I hate vcu and it reminded me how I initially became the type of fan I am and how I have been spoiled by our success. Coming into the game tonight, being heavy under dogs with none of our fans giving us a realistic expectation of winning, it reminded me of our games against the Twerps back in late 90's/early 00's. I went into those games rooting for my school and my team because I, like them, am a Patriot. I went into those games hoping to witness the upset, a type of joy that only the fans of underdogs ever get to experience.

So screw it, stop stressing so much and bickering with other Patriots about whether it's Hewitt's fault, the players fault, etc. (hint - it's both). Just reset your expectations, support the team and hope for upsets rather than expecting wins. It will add years to your life.

Note - please keep in mind that we as fans are not the players, the coach or the administration. We should reset our expectations, not them. We, except for very large donors, have little to zero impact on whether Coaches are fired and on what decisions are made. Not supporting our team, many of whom have dedicated the last 4-5 years of their life to be the best player they can be, only hurts our program and yourself as a fan. Think of it as a marriage - for better or worse. What I mean by support is attending games and rooting for the team, I don't mean we can't criticize.

Its amazing how obsessed vcu fans are with a school that they claim is not their rival.

I'd rather be the 16 point underdog than the team that went from ranked #10 to being called a huge disappointment.

Not only are we not their rival, but we are just scum of the earth and so disrespectful, even though they have numerous instances of equal or worse disrespect.

I'll be on my couch, rooting Mason on, and hoping that they are as pumped up as the Mason community gets, and hopefully give us something to be proud of. This includes no tweeting, and ensuring they get the proper cues to get on the court.

Joe--excellent post. I too put on the holiday heft but will be treking to the gym early then back to the couch by 7:00pm where I will don my green and gold and yell at the TV and, irrespective of outcome, thank my lucky stars that I am a Patriot fan.

I don't agree with lowering our expectations, necessarily, but we should always support the team!

I'm marching down to the court house, with pitchfork in hand, to get this stupid marriage with PH annulled.

I believe I am supporting the program's long-term interests by rooting for our coach to get fired. He simply sucks, and I'm tired of feeling bad about criticizing someone who is so clearly inept.

That doesn't mean I can't absolutely taste a victory over those vcu dickheads tonight.

I just think it's sad that less than eight years after our FF run, we have a Mason fan talking about lowering expectations to those that most of us held in the early Larranaga years.

No offense Joe, but we've been (almost) to the top of the mountain and I find such rationalizing about the piss-poor state of our program unacceptable. We're better than that -- or at least we used to be.
