Exhibition #1: GMU vs St. Thomas University on Monday, October 23, at 7:00PM.
I did not research the exhibition games like I do regular season games, but, I did want to provide a thread for discussion if anyone is interested. I am just excited to see our guys in game action, even if it’s an “exhibition” against an NAIA opponent.
Normal game threads with KenPom, NET, comparative stats, etc. will begin with the home opener against Monmouth on 11/6.
FYI. St. Thomas University is a private Catholic university in Miami Gardens, Florida. As of 2021, the university enrolled 5,921 students, which included 1,797 undergraduate students, 1,498 graduate students, 780 law students, 62 non-degree students, and 1,784 dual enrollment (high school) students.
They are currently an NAIA school in basketball. NAIA is a college athletics governing body for small college athletics programs. Top NAIA programs are “considered to match the talent at mid/high level D2 schools”.
The team mascot is the Bobcats. Last season they finished 26-8 overall and 11-5 in the Sun Conference. They were 16-1 at home, 5-4 on the road, and 5-3 at neutral sites. They advanced to the NAIA National Tournament but lost to #6 Tougaloo (Miss.) In short, they had a good season.
They have won the NAIA men’s basketball championship 3 times, most recently in 2009.
The Bobcats return leading scorer from last season in 6’3” Milton Mathews (18.7 ppg). Their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th leading scorers are no longer with the team. Last season they averaged 83.9 points per game on 46.2% shooting (30.0% from 3). They made 74.3 % from the free throw stripe.
