That is a tough exhibition game. To have to play Saint Will Thomas is going to be tough. Sure he is just one guy, but it is Will f**king Thomas!

Exhibition #1: GMU vs St. Thomas University on Monday, October 23, at 7:00PM.

I did not research the exhibition games like I do regular season games, but, I did want to provide a thread for discussion if anyone is interested. I am just excited to see our guys in game action, even if it’s an “exhibition” against an NAIA opponent.

Normal game threads with KenPom, NET, comparative stats, etc. will begin with the home opener against Monmouth on 11/6.

FYI. St. Thomas University is a private Catholic university in Miami Gardens, Florida. As of 2021, the university enrolled 5,921 students, which included 1,797 undergraduate students, 1,498 graduate students, 780 law students, 62 non-degree students, and 1,784 dual enrollment (high school) students.

They are currently an NAIA school in basketball. NAIA is a college athletics governing body for small college athletics programs. Top NAIA programs are “considered to match the talent at mid/high level D2 schools”.

The team mascot is the Bobcats. Last season they finished 26-8 overall and 11-5 in the Sun Conference. They were 16-1 at home, 5-4 on the road, and 5-3 at neutral sites. They advanced to the NAIA National Tournament but lost to #6 Tougaloo (Miss.) In short, they had a good season.

They have won the NAIA men’s basketball championship 3 times, most recently in 2009.

The Bobcats return leading scorer from last season in 6’3” Milton Mathews (18.7 ppg). Their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th leading scorers are no longer with the team. Last season they averaged 83.9 points per game on 46.2% shooting (30.0% from 3). They made 74.3 % from the free throw stripe.

23-24 Roster: https://stubobcats.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster
Stats from last season: https://stubobcats.com/sports/mens-basketball/stats/

Discuss.

Getting back to St. Thomas. I am looking to see exactly what "Patriot Pressure" is. Curious about who will start. We should pound them. Anything less than a 20 point win will not be a good sign.

Yea Im interested in seeing how aggressive the full court press is.

Also some other stuff I want to know about the full court press:

1. Will it only be used on made baskets?

2. Will it trap at the half court?

3. Will it still be used in the last 5 minutes of the game aka the most important part of the game?

4. How many turnovers will it cause?

For the starting line up, I think it will be:

-Ronny
-Darius Maddox
-Jared Billups
-Keyshawn Hall
-Amari Kelly or Malik Henry

Looking forward to the warm up game and seeing the guys in action.

Also looking forward to folks freaking out if St Thomas goes on a 5-0 run.

St Thomas has Anthony Harris who played at PVI and originally played at unc.

And apparently the ticket office thought it was okay to mail out paper season tickets today... using UPS which doesn't deliver on weekends... Some things never change.

Should be delivered on Monday...by 7PM.

lol - wonder what the issue was and why it’s so late.

Or it’s mason being mason. I’ll pick the latter.

Harris was supposed to go to Rhode Island, don't know what happened but I thought he'd be a stud in the A-10. He was getting minutes at UNC as a fresh/soph. Wild that he ended up at St Thoms and his first game is back in Fairfax. I imagine he'll be looking to transfer again after this season.

Also, definitely thought we were playing a team from the Virgin Islands.

Some background on Harris at UNC. I presume Lamar would have good familiarity with him.

Yeah, Im sure Lamar and Tony both know him well from recruiting the area. Looks like he had a Seton Hall offer in 2018 amongst various others. Had a mason offer in 2016 of course.

But like it was mentioned I’m sure he will look to try to get back to d1.
