Well, I would usually say that stats are for losers, but in this case...lol...what is G Mas? 5-4? They are lucky. American? LeMar? St. Francis, PA? Jesus.

It just goes to show how misleading stats are when we are ranked 65th in scoring defense. That is easily the Achille's Heel of this team. It also shows how overrated assists are, because it's pretty damn near impossible to get an assist on a team that is shooting 42% from the floor. I am actually surprised we are shooting 68% from the FT line. I would have guessed somewhere in the high 50s.

Perhaps, the FG% would be higher with better ball movement. My favorite stat is turnover margin; i.e., are you maximizing your scoring opportunities while minimizing your opponent's?

I'm confused Tom, how do these stats show that assists are overrated? Our assist rates are terrible, just like our offense. Typically the most offensively efficient teams will have excellent assist numbers.

smurf, I'm saying that assists as a stat are overrated, because it's contingent on conversion. If I make a perfect pass to you and you blow a layup, I get no assist. If I throw it it you on the wing and you heave up a 35-foot shot, I get an assist if it goes in. Part of the reason our assists are so low is due to not sharing the ball enough, but another part is because our shooting is so bad.

For the record, I think saves in baseball are also a distorted stat. Jim Johnson is considered one of the top closers in baseball due to his saves total, but his ERA was ridiculously high last year (not to mention the 9 games he blew). As an Orioles fan, I did not shed any tears when he was dealt to the A's.

This is why I've enumerated several stats. No one should focus just on one stat to understand the big picture. But, in their entirety, these stats do not paint a pretty picture.

We've mentioned our big men and 3 point shooters, but what about the mid-range shooters? I've never seen so many shots that looked like they were shot with alligator arms missing short more times than I can remember. I liked Tom's suggestion from another thread, ie. The Herb Brooks approach.

There's certainly something to that, but good passers set their teammates up for better shots. In theory that should lead to a higher field goal percentage, but I guess the point is that their related. Pablos didn't list it, but the better stat is assists per basket made since that can help account for our poor shooting. Our A/B% is 45. which ranks 273. Still, not good.

All valid points, smurf. The bottom line is we need to pass and shoot better. Hopefully, Moore will get more playing time and make the offense run more smoothly.

Even if we're more efficient offensively, we're not likely to improve much statistically when it comes to assists.

I got this from another site, and I don't have the time to verify it, but a GW poster said that dating back to 2003 (as far back as Pomeroy has stats), Hewitt's teams have never been in the top 100 in assist% -- even with guys like Jarrett Jack and Will Bynum at PG.

The GW poster also correctly noted that Hewitt's system relies heavily on 1-on-1 plays and isolating mismatches. It generally produces more ball movement via the dribble instead of the pass, and we've certainly seen that so far this season.

Maybe he can create a catchy tagline for it. Something like "Run The System."

Wasn't run the system something like jack us as many shots as possible to generate as many possessions as possible -- make the "shot clock" closer to 15 seconds than 35?

It's another "Paul Ball" joke. Get it.
