News Trey Porter to Old Dominion

Hmm. I did find it odd how little respect he was getting from posters here. I mean, he was starting at the end of the year as a true freshman.
I think he played because Blewitt was trying to live vicariously through the forwards. Also, the best odds we had of winning was getting the ball between the blocks, and Porter was simply tall enough to change our odds.

I always loved Porter's height, athleticism and energy. If ODU plays an uptempo style, he could be a solid contributor down there. That said, and I felt this way when he played for us, I just don't envision him ever having the size or talent to be a really successful back-to-the-basket, low-post player.

Either way, I wish nothing but the best for the kid. I don't root against ODU anymore now that we are in different conferences — and Razor and T-Mac eloped — so I hope this situation works out for everybody involved (including us).

He shot a lot of bricks, but his shooting form looked good to me. I think the mechanics are there to be a good shooter out to 15 feet or so. He just needs the repetition it takes to become a good shooter. A good coach will get a lot out of him in 2 or 3 years.

He has a chance to be a very good defender with his athleticism and timing. Unique among all the Mason players I've seen in that regard.

He probably should have red shirted this past season. He should have been put on the Jalen Jenkins plan. But, alas, his coach had a job that needed saving, so Porter had to play. :slap:

I may be in the minority here but once he gains at least 20-30 pounds, I think Porter could be an All Conference player. Very active, athletic player with a great motor. If he develops some post moves, he could provide alot of match up problems.

We have to remember he needs to recover from a bad dose of Hewitt radiation. Once he detoxes, look out. I think ODU got a better player than they know.

I agree with Chankenstank, everyone on here is being overly critical of Porter now that he has chosen to go to ODU. I admit, it makes me hate the young man on a personal level now, but I think he has a tremendous upside if he puts in the work, receives proper coaching and gains a significant amount of weight. He is EXTREMELY athletic for his size. He really should have red shirted this year but was forced into action thanks to Copes.

Thought for sure Trey would go to whoever convincingly offered to put him on the NBA/pro track. Hope the guy does well at ODU. He seemed pretty talented to me.

If he has blood sugar health issues I hope he he works with a nutritionist and takes it seriously.

He should be on a ketatonic diet. Great for diabetes.

I would agree more with Chankenstank's assessment. I think he needs some time, weight and strength. However, he has good timing on his shot blocking and is fluid in his shooting, if not always accurate. He is a good dunker going after the ball pretty hard despite his weight disadvantage. He is not as refined as Jonathan Arledge but I could see him having some similar attributes over time. Despite his weight disadvantage, he was not timid during the games but was from time to time overwhelmed strength wise. With the right coaching and physical development, I think he could be a solid contributor.

Jeff Jones has had decent luck taking on a couple of "big man" transfers over the years. Vlad Moldoveanu when he was at American and Arledge at ODU. (Vlad is now playing professionally in Poland: http://www.vladmoldoveanu.com/). Both of those guys like to take mid-range to long shots and had good shooting technique although Arledge could play inside as well and developed some reasonable moves in the post.

Trey's style is closer to Vlad at this point although not yet the 3 point threat that Vlad turned into against Patriot League competition. Hard to tell if Trey will ever be bulky enough to play effectively underneath on offense but his length enables him to change shots in close along with the blocks he gets.

So maybe it's more accurate to say that Jeff Jones enjoys our sloppy seconds.

[QUOTE=" Has a nice stroke, from 15 feet as well./QUOTE]

What have you been smoking? Did you actually go to any games? More like a brick layer from 15 feet.

West Virginia, Charleston and several other games early he showed a nice touch from around 15 feet (even made a few of them and-1's). I'll admit he regressed as the season went on, but for a lanky freshman to shoot 47% and almost 60% from the line, is not exactly the stats of a bricklayer. I usually felt better about him taking an elbow jumper than trying to get anything up around the rim that wasn't a dunk. He was too weak to operate down there.

I'm largely with Chank too. With a real coach, this kid could be a player his final few years at ODU. Though if his work ethic sucked, I'm glad to see him go.

With no knowledge of how events actually unfolded, I can imagine DP watching Trey close out on a perimeter shooter with his typical lack of urgency and deciding on the spot that he couldn't play here.

Kidding ... sort of.

Trey is good at coming off the ball to block shots, but he's as slow rotating to the open man on the perimeter as any athletic guy has the right to be.

After a while, it got to be where the other team would bury a 3 and I knew it was Trey's blown assignment without even having to take a second look.

Maybe Jones can get him to try harder than master motivator Hewitt did.

Amen. I was always so confused when Hewitt would actually put Trey in for Jalen as a defensive substitution late in games, only to have Trey's man wait in the corner and eventually hit an open 3. Jalen has his challenges as well, but he was 100 times better at closing out on perimeter shooters than Trey.
