So what's the scouting report on him? How does he compare to Arledge? Arledge was big for us last year.

Why, yet again, weren't we blocked?

Thanks fellas, good luck next year! ;)

I'm not going to lie about being surly about this.

You weren't blocked because Paulsen is trying to be classy about it, but my hate for ODU dies hard (even if they do have a coach I think is awesome).

Porter is probably longer than Arledge, but MUCH skinnier. But, games are not too too too dissimilar. Both are face up guys first. Porter is a much less polished product, but that's to be expected, he's 4 years younger.

Despite the fact that I used to loathe ODU, I'm glad Paulsen didn't block Porter from going there because IMHO it would've looked unnecessarily mean-spirited.

First, and most obviously, we're no longer in the same conference. Even if we continue to schedule each other for OOC home-and-homes, it's not gonna hurt us that much if we have to face him down the road.

Second, I'm pretty sure ODU was one of the schools Trey considered coming out of HS. If this allows him a mulligan on his original decision, good for him -- he's not the only one who fell for the Hewitt BS hook, line and stinker.

Finally, it will only benefit Mason if Paulsen has a rep on the recruiting trail as a guy who's not looking to put unreasonable demands on guys who decide to transfer.

Sometimes these situations don't work out for whatever reason. We don't need AAU coaches steering their players away from Mason for fear that our coach will act like a scorned girlfriend if they ever want to change schools.

I understand that he was lacking some weight, but how is his upside? I've never seen him play. Was he one of the guys that y'all anticipated would develop into a solid contributor?

He has good length and athleticism. His contribution last season was blocking shots. Fundamentals is what he'll have to work on.

He is a typical Hewitt recruit: long, athletic, but not particularly skilled.

His greatest contribution was blocking shots and finishing alley-oops.

The redshirt year should help him, though. He probably should've redshirted at Mason and could've if Copes hadn't surrendered to his inner Spicoli.

He also struggles with diabetes. Hewitt mentioned it a few times last year that they had to watch his minutes/practice time because of it.

I hope he does well but I wouldn't expect an ALL CUSA player.

You know, I thought he had potential. I thought he had reasonably soft hands, but he also looked like a guy who it wasn't automatic that he was going to be able to add the muscle. Slim frame.

Under a good coach, I'd guess that he would develop into at least a solid role player.

Got pushed around by guards, cheerleaders, band members, and anyone else near the court. ZERO offensive ability. Will grab the occasional spectacular rebound and block a shot or two. Absolutely NO Loss to GMU or gain to ODU. His frame will never allow him to star. He is the 2nd coming of Joey Beard for those of you old enough to know.

Great length but also great timing on the defensive end. Much better as a help defender than one-on-one. Has a nice stroke, from 15 feet as well.

I think you landed a pretty good one. He'll never dominate the glass because of his frame, and there were rumors he was put off by Paulsen because their first practice he made them hustle and actually work hard, but he has decent instincts and length you can't teach.

Wow, there's a blast from the past. Coach K batted .500 with South Lakes recruits. Hit a homer with Grant Hill, and struck out big time with Beard.

What have you been smoking? Did you actually go to any games? More like a brick layer from 15 feet.

Joey Beard? I thought he was a flat-footed center?

Trey Porter is a good pickup for ODU. Has the potential to do a little offensively with short jumpers and off the pick and roll, maybe in the post if some weight comes. Good help defensively.

Won't be all-conference or anything but a solid pickup.

He's a good dunker too. But, like previously mentioned, just too skinny to utilize that outside of wide open opportunities.

He is rail thin. Needs to take Creatine or some other muscle/fat builder to gain a ton of weight. His legs look very weak and thin.

He has good instincts and is more defensive than offensive skill setted. He can probably pour in 8-10 points a game when he is a Junior or Senior and block some shots. He was young and a mediocre A-10 player with us.

Thanks for the insight guys. Sounds like a project that could blossom by his RS JR or RS SR years. Pulling for y'all to get things together in Fairfax. It happens quick.

I may be in the minority here but once he gains at least 20-30 pounds, I think Porter could be an All Conference player. Very active, athletic player with a great motor. If he develops some post moves, he could provide alot of match up problems.

We have to remember he needs to recover from a bad dose of Hewitt radiation. Once he detoxes, look out. I think ODU got a better player than they know.

Hmm. I did find it odd how little respect he was getting from posters here. I mean, he was starting at the end of the year as a true freshman.
